Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Recommendations for a good laser printer.

I need a recommendation for a good quality laser printer, B/W preferrably, but color recommendations are also welcome, that will work well with A4V6. Since A4 is no longer supported by AS, I'm worried that some of the newer models may not work at all. This is for a single machine in my office now but I may be hooking up a second machine in the near future so a network capable model is also being considered.

    Thank you,
    Kerry

    Hi Kerry,

We have been using a HP4000N with Alpha4v6.2 for about 2 years without any problems.

      Hi,
We have been using HP Laser Jet 2100 for 2 years. It uses the HPLJ I II III IV setting with no problems for regular printing & typeset printing. Needs no start up routine. For a color printer, we use the HPDJ 722. This needs a simple startup routine.
Good Luck, and smart move for asking before buying!

We have been using HP printers, both Deskjet and Laserjet, for years without any major printing problems. The HP Laserjet 2100 and HP Laserjet 5 are currently being used in our company. They print very fast and clear. Setup is a breeze too.

It would seem that the safe bet is a Hewlett Packard. I want to thank all of you who offered suggestions. If there are any other brands that also work well I would love to hear from you. Thanks again.

I have two of the Lexmark Optra printers which work great with Alpha Four. I do not have the most recent model, but I was told by CDW that it has the same compatibility as my current printers, which are 16 page per minute models.

On this topic, I might recommend CDW as a source. We buy all of our computer products from them mail order. Their reps check out issues like compatibility and warranty them to work if they say they will. They have a tech support staff on site also, so you do not have to go back to the manufacturer. I have found that their tech support people are generally more knowledgeable than the manufacturers' tech people because they (CDW) work in an environment consisting of computers, printers and other peripherals they sell. The manufacturers know little of the way the various other components work with their hardware. I received bad advice from Lexmark on connecting multiple computers to one printer and got bailed out by CDW as an example.

                Hi Keith,

What A4 driver do you use with that printer. I have a 4050n and am having trouble getting it to work.

                  Jim;
We use an HP 4050 (among other printers) for Alpha 4 v6 and use the HP I/II/III/IV driver without any problems.

Just to add another option: the NEC 870 works great with A4v6, using the HP Laserjet IIP driver. It's fast and works in both text and typeset mode under Win 98.
