Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    New to Alpha

I'm looking to purchase Alpha Software but I'm not sure if I should purchase Alpha 4 V6 which is the dos version
or should I purchase Alpha 5 windows version.

Please let me know which program you feel works best for you. I just want something I can setup quicking to track purchase requisitions and inventory.

    Thanks for your help

    RE: New to Alpha

I have used Alpha 4 V 1-6 for several years. I am also using Alpha 5 V4 (upgread to V4.5 and V5 later) for about a year. A4V6 is by far easier to used. A5 is a windows db and is much more powerful. I would chose A4V6 if I know that I would never go to a windows db. However, DOS is almost gone. And I say that when my first computer was an H89 Zenith with 48K (not M) of memory. In the long run, A5 would be the best, since like it or not, Windows programs is here to stay. In closing, I will say that I still use A4 with old application I have written, but if I write any new applications, I do so in A5. Good-luck.

As far as win 2000 for A4V6, check the msg board Search. There are several answers to this question. Another thought since I wrote you. If you are looking for someting quick, fast and easy, go with A4V6, otherwise go with A5.

          RE: New to Alpha

I'm using both, A4 (dos) & A5 (win). Presently in the "slow" process of learning A5 & moving stuff over to A5 from A4.

Though I tremendously love A4, it has done some great things for me, (or I should say, allowed me to do great things with it) if I were starting now I'd start with A5. With the improvements promised in version 5 of A5 to be released next quarter (I hope) it promises to be one heck of a great product.

            RE: New to Alpha

it doesn't make any sense to go backwards. a4v6 was and is a fine does database. most of us that still use it have a big investment in time preparing the various things that can't be switched to a5. moreover we don't want to make the time to start over.

            we are stuck!

you have to make the time to learn something. go with the future.
