Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Lan Error: Adapter Malfunction

    Hi
    I have just copied all the Alpha4v3 directories from my old Win95 PC to my new Win2000 PC and when I try and run A4 I get;
Lan Error: adapter malfunction - please reboot
Does anyone have any idea how to fix this.
We are using a single licence version (I think) and I don't know where the original install disks are.
    Thanks

I have the same problem. Also single-user. I've been porting my A4V3 app from DOS to Win 3.1 to 95 to 98. No problems. Now, after copying all the files to a new Win 2000 box, I get the "LAN Error: Adapter malfunction" message.

I tried all the suggestions in the bill/Ken Herrold exchange, but with no success.

Have you gotten anywhere with this? Does anyone else have a clue? This is serious: If I can't resolve the problem, I'll have to scrub the hard drive and reload 98. That would be a shame.

      RE: Lan Error: Adapter Malfunction

      Hi Dave
I still can not get it to work. My PC was new and has only ever had one NIC card. I have no idea what is going on. This might be the end of my Alpha 4.

        RE: Lan Error: Adapter Malfunction

Me too. I copied my Alpha files via Zip drive after loading the OS and peripherals. I can't imagine what previous information the PC could have had about Alpha. Or why the Registry should know or care anything about an old DOS program.

By searching on the Web, I discovered that "Adapter malfunction" is a Net BIOS error (50h-FEh). I don't know hardware, so I can't take it further, but I suspect something very low-level is happening when we try to run Alpha Four. Perhaps the program (which is supposed to be single-user) is getting confused by networking devices it finds in Windows 2000. Whatever it is, it's something that wasn't there in 95/98.

Bill, Ken, are you listening? Any thoughts? Anyone else?

          RE: Lan Error: Adapter Malfunction

I feel your frustration. I spend a couple of weeks hammering at this same problem and finally found a resolution to my issue.

Did you say you tried seeing if there was any phantom devices by using the following commands in a command prompt.

          set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1
          cdwinntsystem32
          start devmgmt.msc

The last command starts the device manager. Then click on the View menu and choose Show Hidden devices. If there is a phantom adapter, it will show up. Then you uninstall all adapters (right click uninstall) and reboot.

If this doesn't work try uninstalling all adapters and all protocols. Reboot and after it detects your adapter, install the protocol again.

I'm betting some of these computer companies clone pc's as well which could cause a phantom nic. I don't think they install each machine from scratch. Maybe I'm wrong. Who knows. :-)

            Bill and All.

Here I am - Ken Herrold and now I have the problem. Helping someone on the board, I've taken to running a single user version 3 of alpha 4 to help them. We've zipped and installed thier files and now for the first time ever, I'm getting the same error message and have to reboot to start over.

What is the source of your information, Bill. It's referring to a cd to a win nt system 32 - of course I tried cdwindowssystem32 and got an error message - no file.. Yours must be a utility in NT - I'm running plain ole Win 98. It took the set statement [first line, with no error returned] but then the Cdwinntsystem32 would fail --- not in NT. You must have been operating from NT to have had success with it. Perhaps the source you found can also discuss correcting this in Win98. Where in the world did you find that?

            What say?

              Ken:

I think this is where Bill got his information:
              http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q241/2/57.asp

The syntax of that command line is not quite correct. You do have to insert spaces and backslashes in the right places.

I think it applies to Windows 2000 only.

I didn't realize anyone was seeing the LAN error message on Windows 98. Hmmm...

I was unable to get round the problem on my machine, and wound up reformatting, installing Windows 98, and reloading all my software. AlphaFour V.3 works fine now, so, at least in my case, I know the OS had something to do with it.

              Good luck!

                RE: Lan Error: Adapter Malfunction

I think my solution only works on Windows 2000. I don't think Windows 98 has the ability to show phantom devices if there is such a thing in 98. Not sure on this though. I only had this problem on 2000 and the commands I listed showed the phantom device so I was able to uninstall. Once I uninstall all adapters and rebooted, everything was fine.
I think Alpha4 some how binds to the default adapter. If there is a phantom adapter in your registry, it tries to use it.
