Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Downgrading from A5V3 to A4V6

OOps I made a mistake in the Windows Version so here is the revised message.

    Hi There!

I started off using Alpha in about 1990 with A4V2 then upgraded to A4V4 then eventually A4V6 with Runtime.

Over the years I was able to the use the software with ease.

When I upgraded from Dos versions to Windows versions A5V2 then to A5V3 I had a hard time learning how to use the software.

I think I'm going to downgrade back to A4V6

Are there any users out there that have gone through a similar transition over the years and gone back to Dos Version or do you think I should stick in and stay with the newer versions?

    Thanks

    Brian

The dos version has been great for us, and we have been using it for years with the runtime- like you. I would stay with it but Windows isn't going to support it in the future and there will be a lot of features in Windows in a few years that I'm sure I will want to take advantage of. Also when it comes out, check out A5V5, it promises to be a big upgrade from ver 4 and has a lot of really nice features. I would probably stay with A4, but i really want to use some of the features in A5V5. Any way you look at it though it is a tough move to make, and I don't think Alpha has done as much as they might have to make the move easier. (Are you listening Selwyn). Alpha is a small company so we can't expect too much but I have some things that I want A5 to do to make it act in some cases like A4 and I'm having a hard time with it. (due i'm sure to my limitations- not Alpha's)

      Russ:
On newer computers, Windows ME and Windows 2000, Alpha 4 seems to corrupting some DBF's.
There are problems with the new windows memory manager and alpha4.
DOS applications may not run correctly in the Future.
The learning curve is big but it is well worth it to move and stay with Alpha5.(especially when the new version comes out in March)
What types of applications do you have in Alpha4?

          Hi Charlie!

          I'm running under Windows 98.

Years ago I wrote a vehicle maintainance tracking app for a Company I worked for followed by tool crip inventory app then a job shop package for keeping track of jobs going thru a machine shop.

However I havn't used Alpha since I bought A5V3 I think back in 1997. I just had the urge to put together a quoting app to help me in sales. And also an inventory control package with bar coding.

          Brian..

            Brian:
Do you still have a copy of your vehicle maintainance tracking app or tool crip inventory app. I would like to see how you did that.
I don't need any data. Could you zip up the apps if they are not to big.
I have only been using Alpha5v4 for about 6 months.
Before that I was all Alpha4 for about 6 years.
            Thanks
