Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

There is no such thing. If you want to continue using Alpha Four and want to print to a Windows printer, you will need to upgrade to A4v8.

This upgrade to V8 will give me plug and play capabilities with turn key operation when using my existing alpha4v2 database?

A4v2 was released in the mid 1980s. I honestly have no idea what compatibility problems you might have.

Whom can I talk to to find out? This needs to be a transparent turn over.

Users on the messageboard who have gone through this upgrade process, or you can try to find an Alpha Four consultant. Like I said, the version of the software you are using is almost 20 years and 6 versions old, so I doubt it will be completely seamless.

                  Converting/Updating From A4V2

Is this on the same topic as your other thread re: converting/upgrading from A4V2?

As Aaron said, going from where you are (A4V2, presumably running under DOS) to something that is current (A4V8 still running under DOS, or A5V7 running under Windows) could conservatively be called a quantum leap. About the only thing your can expect to survive if you elect the A5V7 route are the data tables (the .dbf files). Everything else will need to be recreated. The task is challenging, but doable. Many of us have gone down that road before.

If you decide to do it yourself, there are many approaches you an take. Personally, I would strongly suggest the A5V7 route. Make a copy of both the data files (the .dbf files) and the memo files (the .dbf files) to a folder under A5V7. You can attempt to mimic the A4V2 application, but with all the new features and functions that A5V7 offers, you would be better off to redesign the application to take advantage of those new features and functions.

If you elect the A4V8 route, there will be some glitches, but off the top of my head, I can't think what they might be. Make a copy of what you have to a new folder under A4V8 and experiment with the copy - leave the original alone.

                  Good luck
