Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    NOT ENOUGH MEMORY

    Running A4V6 from a Windows shortcut seems to have no problems..... Being a maverick, I'd like to try running it from the command prompt.... Long story to short version, I have Boot Magic running and have to interrupt the regular boot sequence to get to the menu that allows me to pick "command prompt only".....

    Here's where the problem starts... I have 256 Mbytes RAM but dos will not find any XMS.....
    Regular Windows config.sys command is : device=c:windowsemm386.exe noems

    I have tried using various switches to force formation of XMS memory with no success....

    Have tried L=2048, L=4096; RAM; leaving off the NOEMS -- but nothing will create enough XMS memory to run A4V6 under dos....

    any help will be appreciated...

    R. Coleman.....

    RE: NOT ENOUGH MEMORY

    don't know if this will help, but my MS-DOS v 6 manual contains the following as a typical CONFIG.SYS file for taking advantage of Extended memory. You'll have to substitute back slashes for the forward slashes, and you should substitute the windows directory where there are references to the dos directory.

    device=c:/dos/himem.sys
    device=c:/dos/emm386.exe ram
    buffers=20
    files =40
    break=on
    dos=high,umb

    I left out the lines that load the mouse driver and SETVER. If you're booting to DOS when you start the machine and want to run your mouse, you'll have to load a mouse driver as well.

    You'll also want to adjust the number of buffers and files to suit A4v6.

      RE: NOT ENOUGH MEMORY

      I don't know which version of Win9x you're running, but the Win95 CD had a folder tucked away somewhere that was called OLDMSDOS or something similar and contained the MEMAKER program that would automatically try to maximize your DOS memory configuration for you. There's something else to try.

        Go to the above address and it will give you all the recommended settings. I have them printed so they can be easy located when needed.

          Thanx Paul,
          That particular sequence of commands was one of the first that I tried and it had no effect....

          thanx anyway,

            Running W98 2nd Edition, but have the oldmsdos folder from other discs....
            Had to use the old 3.1 "menu" commands to split out the different configurations between W98 and DOS...
            Everything works fine to a point...
            I now have enough XMS so that A4V6 will run under DOS, but cannot find any mouse driver info to load the mouse under DOS.... Currently using a Logitech wireless mouse/keyboard..

            Also having a slight problem with printing under DOS.... it works, but has several hang up points....

            Still working on the solution.... will have more later..

            Thanx for the tip

              Ken,

              Cannot find any "title" that refers to this topic.

              Everything that I see is about upgrading from earlier versions of A4V6.....

              Will check again later....

              thanx
