Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

What new color printer works w/A4?

    Hello,

I'm considering purchasing a color printer for my use with windows programs. However, it would also have to be able to print A4 reports, etc.

I hear occassionally in these boards that some of the newer printers don't work with A4. IE, lack of DOS printer drivers.

Can any of you who have recently purchased newer color printers that do work with Alpha Four advise what make & model your using?

    Thanks,
    Mike
    Thank you,

By all means make it a HP. And then make sure it is DOS compatable. I use a HP 722C for 2.5 years now. It has to be jump started but works fine. It is the best printer I have ever owned. I had an epson and gave it away because I wanted better photo printing. The HP 722C did the trick. HP and Kodak developed a photo paper just for photo printing. It is GREAT!!!!

        Thanks guys!

Other than my dot-matrix printers, I'd only really use HP too. I'm just afraid that whatever I get now might not be compatible with dos & A4.

I'll dig into the HP's though.

        Thanks again.

I picked up the HP 970 Cse. Works like a charm.

            Thanks for your advice.

I know that models higher than the HP895Cse work well under DOS, but according to HP, the 895Cse is the LAST true DOS printer. If you can buy the 895Cse, buy it now on HP's web site. They are having a sale - $179.00 for the printer! Great value for a great printer that works in True DOS and Window9x environments.

RE: What new color printer works w/A4?

                Francois,

I had been using an HP Deskjet 870CSe printer with A4V6 running under Win 98 for a number of years and it printed fine - until the printer went south and started printing garbage. When I first got the printer, I made sure that it was DOS compatiable. There was another model that was almost identical to the 870, but was not DOS compatiable. Since I had the printer for a number of years, I felt that I got my money's worth out of it.

I replaced the 870 with an HP Color Laserjet 4500 - not cheap, but a BEAUTIFUL color printer. I just printed a report from within an A4 app (in Win 98) I have and it prints 100%.

Keep in mind that Alpha is NOT providing any more upgrades to A$, and that included printer drivers. You will have to test the available drives, and if you are lucky, you'll find one that works. My client's printers print the reports as I designed them with one minor problem - an extra blank page squirts out between each printed page. Page numbers are fine, we just get an extra page. It's not a problem with them, so we haven't invested any money or effort in trying to fix it.

If you can't find an existing printer driver that works, you might have to build you own. Not impossible, but you better have the control codes at hand before you start.

                Good luck,

                    Hi Ken,

Looking through the Alpha messages and found this from you:

                    >>>By all means make it a HP. And then make sure it is DOS compatable. I use a HP 722C for 2.5 years now. It has to be jump started but works fine. and then printing out my directory from dos, then return to A4 and printing whatever it is I need. It's truly a pain.

Thanks so very much for any help you can give me.

RE: What new color printer works w/A4?

I have a Deskjet 1000C and my printer wouldn't work either. The 1000C, like the 7xxC series is a windows printer that will only print DOS through windows.

I've traced the problem to the 4GW DOS extender. The 4GW DOS
extender cannot wake up windows when it comes time to print.
When I changed to PMODE/W, this printing problem went away.
You can learn about it and download PMODE at:

                      http://www.mindspring.com/~dallison/alpha4.html

With the 4GW DOS extender, the printer needs to be jump started to print from Alpha. I wrote a batch file which I placed on my desktop and named it "Make Alpha Print."

All that's in the batch file is, VER>LPT1. What this command does is it re-directs the VER command from printing on the screen to the device that's on LPT1.

It will print out a line similar to this " WINDOWS 95 [Version 4.00.1111]."

After running the batch file, I can print all day from Alpha as long as I don't reboot the computer.

                      To make this batch file:

Open up notepad; type the line

                      VER>LPTx

                      Then, saveas printalpha.bat

Make it a short cut and place it on your desktop.

x is the lpt port your printer is connected to.

I've included the printer configuration that I use. You can
name yours 722C or what ever you want. It should work fine. Let me know how you made out.

Thanks Ron. I had changed the printer configuration and made the bat file but the problem continued. Then I went to the HP site and downloaded the newest drivers and the problem seems to be solved.

THANKS so much for putting me on the right track. I was really getting tired of having to go to dos and type in the commands every time I wanted to print from A4. And there was no way I would upgrade just to get the printing to work correctly. Seems that Alpha should consider creating a fix to the problem for users to download.

                        Again......Thanks!
