Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    A4V6 Novell Network

A windows 98 PC that previously worked correctly now gives the following message on entering an Alpha application.

Menus work Ok but when the time comes to access data :

    Critical Error

    Not reading drive D

    Retry or Fail

On selecting Fail, the data is then displayed and the program can be used from then as usual.

The data is held on the M drive which is mapped correctly on the PC.

The properties in the windows desktop shortcut are :

    Command Line : M:BARRYA4NET.BAT -A#M:FOCUSTVS.APP -K

    Working File : M:BARRY

I'm sure its something simple and probably to do with the settings in A4Net.bat or A4.bat

Can any kind knowledgeable person help me?

    RE: A4V6 Novell Network

    Alex,

don't know what caused the same problem in our office. Have had installed an A4 V6.2 application on Novell 4.11 network with 10 Win95, WIN NT 4.0 workstations which worked excellent. Then we got a WIN NT 4.0 server and when the workstations had access to both servers, we encountered same problem as you have, but only on the NT workstations. After I copied the application just onto the WIN NT server and switched off Novell (no access to Novell anymore), everything works fine again.
It's no help for you, as I don't know the reason, but I also don't know if you have connected two servers.

        RE: A4V6 Novell Network

        Dear Alex:
We experienced the same problem in our office with Alpha version 6. We upgraded from Windows 3.11 to Windows 98 running a Novell network. (6 workstations). Our Alpha work is on Drive E: and each workstation has a CD ROM drive labeled D:. Once we began receiving the error message, "Failure reading drive D:", we inserted a CD in each CD ROM drive and left it there. It cleared up the problem. Each time Alpha tries to access the D: drive we hear the CD spin up but no error messages appear. I know this seems like an odd solution but it was the only fix we could come up with. I've learned long ago to stop fighting with Alpha and give it what it wants. LOL Good luck. Hope this helps.

            RE: A4V6 Novell Network

Perhaps in your app parameters thare is a reference to a drive that is no longer mapped. There are a lot of places for drives to be referenced. Have you changed the drive mappings at all with the change of net OS? This could also be a drive mapping in A4 that used to exist in the old network but not in the new. Even if it is not necessary it will look for it if it is specified.

I assume you have netbios or netbuie enabled and set as "default" and all the other normal network stuff since it worked before. There is a difference between Novell IPX and NT tcp/ip in how they are set up.

Thanks Russ. We have examined all such files but with no success.
