Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Using DBF from A4V3 in A4V6

First: Thank you Russ and Sue for ur replies. Unfortunately, they did not work.
Sue--A4V3.0.2 does not have its OWN backup or restore utility in the menus.
Russ--I am running WIN95/OSR2 and the associated DOS version. Have files set to 100 in config.sys.

I installed A4V6 into its own directory. Still have A4V3 on same system and it has no trouble accessing the DB file. But when I start Version-6 and try to access the version-3 database, it (V-6) lets me LOOK at the records but I cannot do anything else with it. Says it is PROTECTED. Since I can change, enter, delete, etc., in version-3, I believe it is something in version-6 but for the life of me I can't figure it out. It is not the screen where you can set up protection in version-6, cause I have gone there and everything is OFF!

This has really got me bugged cause it means I cannot use any of my existing version-3 database files and associated forms, reports, etc. in version-6.

I appreciate any additional help you can give me in this problem.

    Sincerely, Robert [email protected]

PS. I will send each of you a zip file containing my A4V3 files for this database to see if you can do anything with it.

RE: Using DBF from A4V3 in A4V6

    Hi Robert

Have you tried to reconfigure one of your V3 DBF's using A4V6?

See if you can add a field to the end of one of you V3 dbf's. If you can this might make it accessible to A4V6 after you make the addition.

    Good Luck

    Robert

On one of the older versions there has to be some kind of conversion done to run properly. I do not remember what version it is. May be well worth going back to the manual and doing some research. Will try to do some looking myself and let you know what I find. Send me a copy of the file too if you wish and I will give it a try also.

      Hope this will help.

        Hi Ken

You are thinking of "A4CVT". It is used to convert Versions 1.0 and 1.1

          Robert,
I got your file and was able to open it up and make changes to the data base and saved the changes. I will look up in the book to see if there isn't something else. My only other guess right now would be to reinstall V6.

It's been my experience that Alpha Four doesn't handle it too well when you use the same database in two different versions.
