Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

I haven't actually seen a copy myself, but I understand that Sybex
published "Mastering Alpha Four, Version Four". Alpha actually didn't
even (AFIK) publish a version 4 book. I just remember getting some
        pamphlets with mine.

            Charles,

No one said anything about the reference manual and tutorial
manual. I received these when I purchased Alpha 4 V6. I would think you could still acquire them from Alpha Software Corp.

              Cathy,

Alpha no longer provides printed manuals for A4V6 when you buy it.
I don't think they have any more, but it might be worth a try.
The "manuals" now come as two .pdf files on a CD. When someone
on the board first _commented_ about this, I called Alpha, explained
that I was a registered user and let them check. Then I asked to buy
the CD. After checking with someone (a supervisor, I guess) they
quoted me a price of $ 20 plus $5 shipping. They are actually quite
legible on screen, and print very nicely.

Cathy, Thanks for your reply dated 9/19. I also gor books with my purchase of A4v6 and I have gone through the tutorial once and am starting it again. All works well when you just read, look at their demo and do what they tell you but when you (I) want to do something a little different I have problems. So how does a person become a good A4 user?

                  Hi Charles

Do you know about Alpha Forum?

                  http://www.alphaforum.com/

They have an archive of past articles with tips, techniques, and how to scripts. I don't know how far back they go. I have been a long time subscriber but they seem to be very moribund right now.

Anyways they used to publish a hard copy newsletter before they went on the web. I find their back issues very useful for researching a problem.

I want to keep mind but there might be someone out there who would part with their's

                  Good Luck

                    RE: AlphaFour Books

To paraphrase Charlton Heston - "Not from my dying fingers!" My A4 books are dogeared, dirty and there are a few loose pages, BUT they are invaluable - even if II periodically think I know what I'm doing! One of my A4 customers just bought a five-user upgrade and did, in fact, received the manuals on CD. I STRONGLY suggested that they do what I did with my A5 manual-on-a-CD - print them. A 3 inch, 3 hole binder, and you're in business.

If the lack of a printed manual was my biggest complaint, I'd consider myself a happy camper. Printing the manual from the CD is heap investment for what you get.

I believe that there is also a link from the purchase part of this site to an outfit that will print them and spiral bind them for a reasonable fee. I did this with the A5 manuals, they aren't as nice as the original A4 manuals but are serviceable.
