Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    RE: barcode readers

I also have questions about barcode readers with A4. I just tried the bar code reader that Radio Shack is giving out free with A4 and it does rally strange things. I decided to stop fooling around before I deleted something important as it seems out of control when you use it. (Hey it was free)
the software that they give you may be OK but I couldn't get it to accept their registration number so I guess they have some work to do. There are packages like the wask bar code packages which I think will work better with A4

      RE: barcode readers

I have no experience with bar-code readers, but can provide what I've heard from others.

I'm told that there are bar code readers that hookup to your PC between it and your keyboard. Maybe they're all like that, I don't know. As hooked up that way when you're in the table field that you need to input data into you simply point & click the bar code reader on the bar code and it'll send the information it reads to the table field as if you've entered it via the keyboard.

Look in the back of the PC Magazine, there are usually about a 1/2 dozen places that advertise & sell bar code solutions in there. I know "Worthington Data Solutions" to be one.

      Good luck,
      Mike

        RE: barcode readers

I use bar code readers to read data into an alpha4 form with no problems. It acts just as if the date has been typed in. The Bar codes are printed by another apllication and the reader must be set for that particular bar code. The reader is just a wedge between keyboard and computer.

          RE: barcode readers

I concur with what Icha said. I have an installation that uses a
barcode scanner and it works 100%, just as if the data was typed.
The application does not print barcodes however, so I can't
address that point of your query.

            RE: barcode readers

            Russ,

Concerning bar code readers, since yours seems to be out of control you may want to check over your data entry process so it will be consistant from field to field. I'd bet that the bar code reader is working consistantly, but what may change is how your database is set up to advance from field to field. If the bar code reader enters a tab to advance and you have some fields set to advance when it gets filled, then you will have Alpha submit an advance followed by the bar code reader entering a tab.

Its possible that the bar code reader connection is noisy, but you would tend to get gibberish from this rather than any coordinated action.
