Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    windows xp compatability

    Hello All,
I just came on as the IT coordinator here and I have a question. There is a current user using Alpha 4 V6 under Windows 98 (not SE) Dos. From what I understand, there is another user that is using a Windows xp pc and without any Alphasoftware and wants to be able to get to the databases ect. I understand there is I believe thay have still in a box, an older windows version Alpha 5 V3, and i am sure there is a more current one. Anyhow, can someone explain the best way to do this so one pc with windows 98 DOS will be able to work in harmony with a XP pc and the approprite Alpf software. I just need to know what software Is needed and how to go about this.
    Thanks very much,

Get a copy of Alpha 4 version 8 for the XP system and leave the ALPHA 4 version 6 on the Win 98.

You'll be able to connect to the same database from both versions. The difference in the versions is based on the difference in the operating systems.

        Hello Mr. Buchholtz,

I know this thread was last updated last July, however the topic is basically the same and hope you can assist. Since then, we have now decide to purchase a new pc for the user and would like to run an Alpha XP version. Currently what is your recommendation as to the release we should purchase. Is there any kind of conversion utility that we can use to get the current data from her windows 98 pc(which is backed up to zip every day) to the XP machine? If there is no conv utility, what do you suggest?
        Thank you very much

          Al

The DOS solution is the same as July 2006.

Alpha 4 version 8 will run your Alpha 4 version 6 system on XP in a DOS command window. It does not require conversion, but will require a little setup. I have seen many XP machines run it with little or no problem and is the easiest transition for you.

The windows version of Alpha is currently Alpha 5 version 7 - with Alpha 5 version 8 due to be released soon. The conversion from the DOS to Windows version of Alpha 5 requires that you manually re-write the system.

The data will move and convert with little to no effort on your part.

The programming environment is completely different - much more powerful - but there is no conversion process to move the A4 code to A5.

Without looking at your system and determining the depth of it's functionality in A4 I can't give you an idea of how much effort it will take to convert to A5.

Your precise path for upgrade will be determined by the need for increase functionality for the system. If you are happy with the way it runs now, take the A4v8 path. If you want to increase the productivity from it, we'd need to measure how much A5v8 would help you.

At some point you will find that Microsoft will remove the DOS functionality from windows. Then you will be forced to move.

            Hello Al,

I thank you very much for this great update. I appreciate it and now I understand what is in front of us. It seems like Alpha 4 version 8 is the way to go. There is really no one here that has the expertise to do the re-write as you mention under XP. Have a great day.

I have just jumped back on board the forum because all our machines are XP and we are using a version of Alpha 4 v3, say, mid 1990's.

Our new XP machines close out of our program when we try to save data, I thought it had something to do with the config.sys files and buffers issues that plaqued us back in the 90s.

Can we modify our files and buffers numbers in the config.sys file as we used to or will we need to go the V8 for the program to work properly?

                In XP it's config.nt not config.sys

A4v3 on XP? Wow - Haven't tried it, doubt I will... Surely you won't be able to modify and database structures with a4v3 on XP. As far as saving data???? don't know.

Safe/Sorry?? You are definitely safer with a4v8 on XP....
