Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Alpha Four Ver. 2

I have the old Alpha Four Version 2 that I purchased a long time ago and am looking for any updates or upgrades to it. I am tring to set up a new data base to handle a vending route I have and need to get something up and running soon.

Any help or info here is greatly appreciated!

    Thanks

    RE: Alpha Four Ver. 2

    Jim,
Alpha just brought out A4V7 for the folks who still want to run the DOS program under Windows. I would definitely upgrade to that unless your computer is very, very old. However, you'd be far better off upgrading all the way to A5V4.5 which is the latest Windows version. Very powerful, but there is a learning curve.

I don't think I'd waste my time on A4V2. Your program will be obsolete before you begin writing it.

There's lots of help on the bulletin boards to get you up and running.

      RE: Alpha Four Ver. 2

Thanks! I actually have 4.2.11 but see what you are saying. My system is not too old and has most of the bells and whistles of any although it is a 350 MHZ. I have 512 mem. and 40 gig drive and a 52X CD with 1 3.5 drive and a backup system. I am useing windows 98. I have had hands on on a couple others and like the 98 more.
The biggest concern is the cost right now. I am handicapped since I was hit by a car 3 years ago and have had 2 operations on my leg. I am limited to what I can do and the small vending route I have started is meger as a income. I am tring to do with what I have till or if I can do better later!! Heck I still don't have a clue how to set up the one I have so what learnning curve :)!

      Thanks again!

Alpha 4 ver 2 will do a lot, particularly if you want to use it to track a vending route. When you are comfortable with it and have the $ A4v6 is much better in many ways. Alpha 5 for windows has a lot more bells and whistles but costs more are is harder to learn. We run a business now on A4v6 and used to do it with A4v2. We will upgrade to A5 but its a big job. You may not need it at this time. Also Alpha 4 (any version) is great to learn database concepts as its based on DOS and doesn't have windows complicating matters. The main thing is to play with it long enough. You never know-someday you may be able to earn money writing apps in Alpha. The folks here on this board are the best you'll find anywhere, as are the owners of Alpha Software.
