Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Locking problem...I'm being attacked

We are running Alpha Four V6 in Windows. I have users in house and I have outside users who access our system thru a terminal server. I know it's not the best set up but this version works so well for us that we don't want to change. The problem is locking! We are constantly locking or having problems getting into files. You lock, unlock, lock unlock or sit waiting to enter a file. I check everyone for filters and there aren't any and also check for users who might be idling in the middle of entering something but everything seems fine. Our internet connect speeds are perfect. Outside of running DOS in Windows, would there be any other reason for us to be locking so much. BTW we have Alpha Five V9 which has been started but never finished because our IT let the company. I'm anxious to hear what you experts out there might suggest! I'm tired of the users attacking and blaming me for this!

Sounds like A4 has referential integrity turned on for some child tables in a set.....

Or are multiple people trying to change the same record at the same time?

Locking when two or more users are on the same record or trying to change a record is normal. To change a record I have to tell the order user to get off the record while I make the change. As far as "referential integrity turned on for some child tables in a set....." I don't understand it but I will forward it to the IT Guru who created this problem back in 1993. How do you feel about using Alpha (DOS) in a windows?

I think the DOS version runs better in Win XP than it does in the original DOS.

I don't do much with A4 now, except convert to windows for clients.
(it is basically a rewrite of the system)

You may want to check your antivirus software and make sure that it is not interfering with Alpha 4 - that can also lock tables while scanning for viruses. You don't need to check for viruses in the directory for Alpha 4...

Got it! We had Alpha Five V9 pretty much completed but my IT Guru retired unexpectedly. We were having trouble fixing a problem with crossover records and he never got a chance to finish it. As far as Alpha Four, I checked our back up programs to see if they were running during the times of the locking and there not but I will check the antivirus software. Thank you very much for you input. This is the most I've gotten over the years.

                  Hi Nancy,

I still have a couple people running on dos for certain apps too. They run flawlessly, but time is running out. It will be a real hassle on one of the apps to convert, but the other 2 are fairly easy and are close to done. I will just have to plug in the data. It is easier for me to do since I wrote the originals than it would be for someone else.

Since your retired Guru had v9 almost completed, that would be a plus for the future for you.

May I suggest looking for someone to finish that project? The v9 app should run fine in v10.5. Let's face it, dos is just about dead and older windows are dying out also. It is just a matter of time.
