Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Al was able to help me figure this out. We expanded the size of the field and restarted the sequencing of the invoice numbers. Ray's suggestion was in line with what we needed to do.

So now the invoice number is 6 characters and is incrementing from 000001, so there should not be any confusion with previous data.

Ray's suggestion of restarting the numbering sequence has merit, unless it would cause linkage problems.

Send me a private message with your phone number and I'll call you.... or post it here and I'll remove it right away...

Yes it is. Is there any remote control available? Or can you use a web cam to show the screen?

Re: Unable To Create New Invoices

    Hi Adam
First, if you can, reset the numbering again from 0001. The previous Invoice 0001 will have been printed more than 5 years ago. So they can go on invoicing.
    Second, heres the rub
I'm pretty sure from what I've read anyway, that you must be using an Alpha4 whatever version because it runs in DOS. Thats really all that counts.
Whatever WIN after 98 became a pain to run DOS as far as networking is concerned, XP with SP 2 or 3 managed LPT ports and sharing adequately. Win7 became very fussy with what Win is serving data and especially printers. But WIN7 with a standalone pC and connected LPT1 printer will continue to run fine - probably have to specify XP compatability. I've had easily over a hundred clients running complex apps on Clipper compiler circa1987 - about 20 still going - happily - except for MS version network foibles. thats why I dont think the version of Alpha really matters.

Those ppl paid like $150 for my fully integrated systems, with all the accounting to balance sheet and bank recon built in plus specialized mods. Thats why some insist I keep them running. Today their only budget choice is off the shelf accounting programs unless they pay what it will cost to get all they had but in GUI. Of course they get a lot more as well as big increase in screen real estate, speed and colour.

I'm not earning at the moment by developing A5v10 with respect for the record locking of the previous system (Clipper and Alpha4 used the same DOS lock mechanisms built in to the OS and compatible DBF files) but I am succeeding. The idea is to be able to scale upgrade, skipping a good few generations and run alpha on top of existing DOS programs. That should give me jump ahead of the opposition. So if you need advice or want to look for an upgrade path , I am right here ->|<-

Assuming you're correct that it is a character field I am dealing with, any ideas how to change it? Because this beast is running on netware 3, I can't do any screen shots.
    Thanks

    Good start.

What version of windows are you running this on? (if any...)

That implies to me that the field is a character field.

But I'm still a little confused about which software you are using.

Please use print screen and post an image of what you are doing so we are advising you on the wrong basis.

My friend is still running netware for dos on his machines and is using the old dos based version of Alpha. I'm desperately trying to upgrade to a new platform but and trying to help them limp along until I can figure our how to upgrade them.
    What a mess.
