Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    The elusive winagent.exe...

I'm so sorry to keep posting...
I am a total newbee at the Alpha game.
Started working in a different part of town and it would seem that everyone in the industrial park uses Alpha 4 v?... wanna upgrade to Windows etc etc - and are having issues.

Anyway - an admin asistant at a site got a new printer and wanted it hooked up. It happens to be a USB printer (EPSON).
Works just fine but don't print her reports from (you guessed it) Alpha..

I read and search on boards and find this is a somewhat common issue. That running WINAGENT.EXE will come to the rescue. She is running Alpha 4 v7.. Where would one find the elusive winagent.exe.. nothing is on her machine so it must not be a windows xp file?

Help me please (or her I should say)
    Jorge

Well the users are in a quandry.
They spent allot of time and money in the design they currently have - they just love it. But the version 7 is not supported - they can't call with a question. They were thinking about upgrading to the Alpha 5 v6 but it would require a revamping of virtually all - not an option for them.
So they asked if v8 was supported - this is doable - they can upgrade - not change a thing and get support from Alpha.

              Yeah! :)

              Thanx

                  RE: The elusive winagent.exe...

They want to be able to call for support when needed, number one. They have allot of new people - none of which has a clue about Alpha. The girl who does there main entry just know how to hit the varios letters. One of which was a good thing - BACKUP.

When they called me in - I've dabbled with DBF and DOS days..
Just clickin and lookin I figured out how to restore the database without her losin one day worth. She has been indicating what she can't do any longer.. so I went a little further... looking..

It looks as though the application calls for F3 in an screen/form and brings up her customer list (she can choose one and hit enter) I looked at her indexes and there is only one when I look at the file about a month ago I see the 8-9 different indexes..

I got ATTACH AN INDEX and the program craps out - Tried to reaad he error but it flashes so quick.. correct me if I'm wrong - it's looking for a PIF file mebbe?

Then she points on the desktop and indicates 2 files.

                  DOS---" A4.exe
This file upon execution is lokking for a PIF that doesn't exist.

                  DOS- Alpha4v7
Upon execution it brings up the program. It looks like A4V7.EXE

I wondered why is she have to files that esentionally are suppose to bring up the same program. She tells me that the A4.exe - she uses to enter all information in file. When it's time for reports she QUITS the program and goes into the other A4v7.exe to print. Still I ask why?

So as you can see I have a couple questions.
No support when I phone - I'm trying to read and quite frankly this program is better than in Paradox/Dbase day's.

                  thanx

                    OK

If I understand corectly she has v6 she uses to enter items - and then moves to v7 to print...

I meandered thru the program files and found A4cvt.exe - I converted her database and now - perhaps - she can just use a4v7 in order to do all? I even noticed not in the printer configuration it sees the USB printer because winagent is running.

See all the indexes - but still get blown out to the desktop if I go to Attach an Index...

As I have said before - that I am just getting involved in Alpha. I found the DBF was not converted - I converted it.
I ran Alpha 7 just fine - and the F3 all the index worked fine (except still getting blown out to desktop when I choose attach an index). I'm goin to her later today and see what I've accomplished works for her.

I'm thinking last individual just knew the keystrokes like a trained chimp. Didn't convert the file so they had to use A6.. just speculation. I'm with you - they should be using one program. Now if I could figure out why attach index is giving fits...
