Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Help with network printers in A7

I have a vendor supplied application that was originally used on Windows 98 machines and connected to a NT server.
We are trying to migrate to a new 2003 server and XP Pro desktops. The application works somewhat...but I can not get the app to see my windows printers. I did a netuse command to map a few printers to an lpt port, but from what I am told I should not have to do that. I have the patch for v7 but that did not help either. Any suggestions?

RE: Help with network printers in A7

    Hi Mike,

Can you upgrade to Alpha Four V8? If you could then, you could
    1) Have better support from us, because our new version is 8.0.
    2) Use the new features like Emailing and Faxing. You can email your reports as PDF attachments.

This I am suggesting you because I am not sure how far the patch for v7 can be useful to you. I can send you a patch file which can write the list of windows printers to ptrinfo.a4 file which will be in the \spool directory under alpha4v7 directory. Under Alpha4v8 it writes to Wptrinfo.a4 file, then you will have to rename the file to ptrinfo.a4.

    regards
    Pawan.

RE: Help with network printers in A7

Like I said it is a vendor supplied app, and we had asked to go to a windows version. I even suggested trying V8 as well. We found a somewhat work around by installing the printers as local printers using the ip address, and changing the port name so it is not duplicated. Then creating the a4x files and copying them into the directory. The problem is for every printer we had to set it up twice, once for portrait and once for landscape. Does v8 fix this? I would like to be able to see the windows printers, select one, and then specify portrait or landscape.

RE: Help with network printers in A7

I am having the exact same problem! Custom application on win98 system (v6) roleing out to 4 XP Pro systems, 2000 server (Active Directory). V8 DOES NOT solve this problem and the only way I have found to even print from the WS at all is to either map a drive, launch the a4v8.exe (from a batch file using the A# tag located on the WS and define path=) from the Server, but this causes a problem that the app does not launch, instead it requests the startup database, and thats the first command in the app. then manually select to run the app again.

I cannot get it to print when I run A4 from the WS and direct it to shared drives. A very frustrating problem! Please Quantify your solution with the IP mapping.

Also how i solved the problem (temp) is to map a drive and install a4v8 on every XP WS into that drive. Then very complicated group policy objects for domain users etc. I still need a proper installation procedure/solution.

        Thanks...
