Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    XP Patch and Shortcuts

The latest XP patch apparently makes changed to Windows Explorer. In the process it appears to have limited the character length in the command line on the desktop shortcuts. I have researched the MS knowledgebase and was unable to locate a way to increase that length back.

Has anybody else been able to increase the character length in the shortcuts on the command line? If so, could you please let me know how?

If not, I need to change the startup location for A4V7 to run a specific application bringing the client to their customized menu. The command line I have been using in the shortcut is: a4v7.exe "-a=c:\federal\federal\federal.app"

Unfortunately the client will not allow me to change the location of their db files so I do not have any other way to shorten the path.

Any help or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

    RE: XP Patch and Shortcuts

Since I am unable to change the shortcut to start A4V7 on the desktop to: a4v7.exe "-a=c:\federal\federal\federal.app"

Where and how do I put this command line via A4 so that when they start a4v7.exe file it goes to the appropriate application?

      RE: XP Patch and Shortcuts

      Hi Cheryl,

I would have thought you could create a batch file containing
      a4v7.exe "-a=c:\federal\federal\federal.app"

then put a shortcut to the batch file on the desktop.

Hope this is of some use,

      Keith

        RE: XP Patch and Shortcuts

Thanks Keith. Excuse me for sounding ignorant, but I do not know how to create a bat file. Do I just create a text file with simply the command line I want and place it in a directory? Do I need to preface the text file with anything specific? Does the bat file need to be a specific filename? Where do I place the file once created? Thanks in advance for your support.

          RE: XP Patch and Shortcuts

          Hi Cheryl,

          No, excuse me for "assuming".

To create a batch file, simply create a text file with
in "edit" or "notepad" with the commands you require, then save the file with the filename you require, say "federal" with the BAT extension.

          In this example
Federal.bat would contain the following command

          a4v7.exe -a=c:\federal\federal\federal.app

Then create a shortcut for this file and place it on your desktop, change the properties of the shortcut to "close on exit" and to run in full screen mode.

          Good luck,
          Keith

            RE: XP Patch and Shortcuts

            Hi again Cheryl,

Sorry, I may have misunderstood. In your Alpha4v7 directory/folder you should already have at least 2 batch files, the ones you are interested are called alpha_start1.bat, this invokes the winagent print manager and the other is called alpha_start2.bat which activates your command line parameters.

So, in the alpha_start2.bat replace this
            a4v7.exe %1 %2 %3 %4 %5
            with
            a4v7.exe -a=c:\federal\federal\federal.app

I have attached the 2 files just in case you don't have them.

            Good luck,
            Keith

            PS
It's the alpha_start2.bat that should be used for your shortcut.
