Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Wiin2000 not releasing V7 users

Well, I've searched the forum and can find messages close, but not on target to the probelm I'm having. We use A4V7, 5 users, and have been running A4 since version 4 I think. It has always been on a Novell server, the latest being Novell 5.0. Workstations are a mix of WinME, Win2000, and WinXP Pro. No problems at all.

This week I moved everything off the Novell server, as I am eliminating that server. The files are now on a Windows 2000 server and again everything is working just fine, with no adjustments. However, when a person leaves Alpha 4 (leaves, not crashes out) their user license doesn't seem to get released, with the obvious problem that after a half day of people coming and going, the license runs out and no one else can get in until I reboot the server, which is not an option twice a day. Nothing else is wrong and the entire application I wrote some years ago still works wonderfully. We have no network/local printer problems, no screen problems, no record locking problems, nothing. A4 has always been totally reliable and solid for us -- since 1994. But this now has me stumped and I feel it must be something to do with moving the files to the Windows 2000 server. Any ideas??

      Steve:

Ed's right! Did you solve the problem?

The use of this forum depends on posting both the problem and the successful [or unsuccessful] result. Others look in on these posts with considerable interest and need to know outcomes.

I see that no one is jumping in with help but, we still need to know what's happenin'

RE: Wiin2000 not releasing V7 users

I had this problem with Windows 2000 also. I am running Alpha4 V7 on a network of 5. Previously I have run all the Alpha versions back to V3.0. The license lockup problem only occured when I went to Windows 2000 server & Professional. We were rebooting several times a day and never got the problem solved until... I got a virus that took down the entire network. I had to reload the server starting with FDISK. I did not have to reload the 4 workstations. When I reloaded Windows 2000 server it asked how many licenses. I told it 15 instead of 5 & have never had a problem since. People at my office tend to open up two windows of Alpha at the same time and I still have no more problems. My Alpha program is extreemly complex, bringing Alpha to its limits with just the script code totalling over 500 pages. Hope this helps.
