Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    unable to select netwrok printer

Despite having downloaded the a4v701 patch I still cannot get my network printer to appear on the list of printers.

    Why?

    John:

Don't quote me but I think I saw a response to this which was solved by a re-install of Alpha v7. As I recall, the windows printers at the time of the installation, are loaded into the program. I don't think there's a way to otherwise get them into the Alpha list.

For the life of me I can't find that specific post for a proper referral.

What could it hurt to try?

Did what you suggested & to no avail.
Even tried installing the patch before running v7 for the 1st time & that didn't work.
Lastly why is thre no way to send a query direct to ALPHA?

        John:

Just a thought... In windows printer setup do you need to 'capture' an LPT port for Alpha to see it?

I'll fool around and see if it does.

RE: unable to select netwrok printer

          John:

That didn't take long... Here's what I found. In WINDOWS when you add a printer, the Wizard asks "Is this a network printer" - of course you would select 'Yes'. Then it asks "Will this be printing for a DOS application?" When you answer 'Yes' to that it directs you to 'Capture' a printer port - to which you respond..'Yes'.

John, I opened Alpha4 Ver7 [on Win98 S.E.] and Voila' - it showed that printer in the Windows' Printer list when I tried to add a new printer in Alpha.

Hope all of this helps. I did notice that you can 'capture' a printer port AFTER the printer has been added to the Windows. Go to the Printer icon in My Computer; right click and pick 'Properties'. A tabbed form will appear with a 'Details' tab. Click on that tab and see the button to 'Capture a printer port."

I'll bet all of that will work on your machine as well. Please let us know if it does.

ps why no Alpha tech support?

I have A4 ver 7 on a network with 4 computers and I have a network printer I had to capture the port on all the computers that use the network work printer. I think I used lpt3 on one of the computers because it already had 2 printer ports. I use windows me.
It looks like you already tried to this I guess. But just thought I would let you know it's working for me.

Wish I could, then it would be easy.

RE: unable to select netwrok printer

Once you add a printer to WinXP it should be available for A4v7 whether it is a network printer or not. I do not have any printers connected directly to desktops, they are all hooked to HP print servers, even an old dot matrix. The only problem I have is printing typeset forms. The forms come out text based. When I tried to set up a dos printer I was unable (as you indicated) to capture a printer port so that the print job knew where to go.

For now I am not able to print typeset forms with WinXP and Av47.
