Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Alpha4V7 and the SUBST Command

On our office Network we have Alpha4V6. I have a Laptop and as such am able to bring work home. Although the Application is written and stored on the "F" drive on our Server, I am able to run the applaction on my Laptop at home by including the DOS Substitue Command (SUBST F: C:) in the batch program that launches AlphaV6 on my Laptop.

We have just upgraded to Alpha4V7 and I am no longer able to open Alpha4 on my Laptop when not connected to the Network. Could it be that Version 7 does not recognize the DOS Substitute Command? If I am correct in making this assumption, is there a way that I can get around this problem?

RE: Alpha4V7 and the SUBST Command

    Don:

I just tried to duplicate your problem on my desktop with Win98 (original) and it works without incident. My A4v7 program files are on 'C:A4V7' - I then ran 'SUBST' to create an "M" drive. Changing only the application path letter in the startup worked just fine.

    C:/A4V7/a4.exe M:/a4v6/shop/checks.set -A#check.app

[excuse the front-slashes - don't know the codes to show those right - this board 'eats' them]

Pressing [F3] at the form screen displays the datapath on 'M' and the program files path on 'C'.

Maybe your start up batch needs work.

Sorry to take so long to reply.

RE: Alpha4V7 and the SUBST Command

      Guys:

Never saw this before and I think it is funny,

Not that familiar with SUBST and, without looking at the help for parameters, I type subst c: m: and the error message was

      'Already substed '

      Cute eh?

RE: Alpha4V7 and the SUBST Command

        Ken,

THANK YOU for steering me in the right direction. I found the error in my batch program! Would you believe that I had made the ASSUMPTION that version 7 did not work like version 6 and that was the problem.

At work we are not using version 7 because of a printing problem and I will now be able to work on this problem at home. On a multi page report we get all pages on the old DOS printers but only the first page of the report on the HP printers. I will ASSUME (again) that we have not setup the HP printers correctly.

We are all in sales and do not have an ISS person on board, as such, we can use all the help we can get.

Again, THANK YOU for the helping hand.

        Don
