Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

What is the best Windows to run Alpha4V8 application

    Hi !
I have a big AlphaFour V8 applications (years of programming). Do not want to invest the time to rewrite it in Alpha 5

I'll be installing this application for my new company, where I'll have to buy new hardware.
What is the best Windows to put on the machines.
On the one hand, I want full compatibility with Alpha4V8, on the other I want to have the latest Windows possible, so I can use all latest applications, with no need to upgrade a year from now.

By the way, if anyone has unused / extra Alpha4V8 Netwotk pak / licenses, I would appreciate a donation or reasonable price.

    Thanks,
    Arie

    Arie,
From the Alpha website products area.....
Even though Alpha Four is a DOS product, version 8 is designed specifiaclly to work with Windows XP, 2000 ME, 98 and 95.
Some have gotten a4v8 to run on later Window's editions but only in a compatibility mode of WinXP or earlier.

      Arie,

The latest and best Windows version is XP/XP Pro without any caveats and in full screen. Vista and Windows 7 are "jump through hoops" operations with some care and frustration to the layman while getting only a small A4 3x6 window on your screen. It can also be risky for data corruption if not done correctly. Runnning A4 V7/V8 networked with the proper license on XP/XP Pro with Vista or Windows 7 is a train wreck looking for a place to happen.

        Thank you for your replies.
Looks that I'll have to buy a machine with Windows XP Pro,if they still sell them :-)

If anybody has unused copies of Alpha4V8 (network edition) at reasonable cost - please let me know.

          Arie,

The major companies (Dell, Gateway, etc.) mass producing are not building new machines with XP/XP Pro. You can build a basic machine yourself or have a local computer shop do the same and install XP Pro on it.

While I don't disagree with Dave in regards to Win XP, I will say that one aspect that I sometimes find VERY useful in A4 that I can't seem to be able to find in XP is cutting and pasting between A4 and Windows. When I need this I use an old PC with Win98 ... a lifesaver.

I need the Alpha 4 applications on all of my desktop, for all employees.
Relegating them to Windows 98 would be a "cruel and unusual punishment:.
Windows XP (Professions?) would be a half bearable solution.
Ideally I would like to install the latest OS possible, which will buy me a long breathing time before a need to upgrade, allowing employees to use the Alpha 4 application, as well as the regular latest Windows programs.

                Duncan,

That and "Print Screen" is also lacking in XP/XP Pro (from a full A4 window). But I'm not about to go back as far as Win 98 to get it! :)

                Arie,

I have no idea the size of your office, the size of your database records nor how complicated A4 is, but you can import it into Excel nicely. It's not the ideal solution of course but on occasion I'll do that for a partial database search for those that do not have A4 and use it that way.

Since I am on a home network with a single A4 license, it won't print so that's my "work-around" on rare occasion. It's strictly a personal but large database and not setup general multi-user use other than myself.

In South Africa we still get the Acer PC's with Win7 and XP-downgradeable DVD's :)

For me, I selected Windows7, installed VirtualMode and it works great. We run Novell ConsoleOne, RconJ and other WindowsXP certified software. We earlier did had problems with OpenVPN but also now solved. Don't be to scared to test yourself (right-click and "runs as administration mode". I also have an Operation with 10PC's that still use Netware 4.12 with DOS Program (Property Administration), The new Windows Apps runs in Win7 and the Netware stuff runs in XP (required Client with Drive Mappings), Hope this Helps :)

                      Phillip,

A4 V7/8 runs in a full window with Windows 7?

                        Dave
                        I don't think so. WIN7 reports
"This system does not support fullscreen mode"
Biggest I've got is about 75%
or a bit too big with Console 28 Maximised
