The Alpha Software Forum Participation Guidelines

The Alpha Software Forum is a free forum created for Alpha Software Developer Community to ask for help, exchange ideas, and share solutions. Alpha Software strives to create an environment where all members of the community can feel safe to participate. In order to ensure the Alpha Software Forum is a place where all feel welcome, forum participants are expected to behave as follows:
  • Be professional in your conduct
  • Be kind to others
  • Be constructive when giving feedback
  • Be open to new ideas and suggestions
  • Stay on topic


Be sure all comments and threads you post are respectful. Posts that contain any of the following content will be considered a violation of your agreement as a member of the Alpha Software Forum Community and will be moderated:
  • Spam.
  • Vulgar language.
  • Quotes from private conversations without permission, including pricing and other sales related discussions.
  • Personal attacks, insults, or subtle put-downs.
  • Harassment, bullying, threatening, mocking, shaming, or deriding anyone.
  • Sexist, racist, homophobic, transphobic, ableist, or otherwise discriminatory jokes and language.
  • Sexually explicit or violent material, links, or language.
  • Pirated, hacked, or copyright-infringing material.
  • Encouraging of others to engage in the above behaviors.


If a thread or post is found to contain any of the content outlined above, a moderator may choose to take one of the following actions:
  • Remove the Post or Thread - the content is removed from the forum.
  • Place the User in Moderation - all posts and new threads must be approved by a moderator before they are posted.
  • Temporarily Ban the User - user is banned from forum for a period of time.
  • Permanently Ban the User - user is permanently banned from the forum.


Moderators may also rename posts and threads if they are too generic or do not property reflect the content.

Moderators may move threads if they have been posted in the incorrect forum.

Threads/Posts questioning specific moderator decisions or actions (such as "why was a user banned?") are not allowed and will be removed.

The owners of Alpha Software Corporation (Forum Owner) reserve the right to remove, edit, move, or close any thread for any reason; or ban any forum member without notice, reason, or explanation.

Community members are encouraged to click the "Report Post" icon in the lower left of a given post if they feel the post is in violation of the rules. This will alert the Moderators to take a look.

Alpha Software Corporation may amend the guidelines from time to time and may also vary the procedures it sets out where appropriate in a particular case. Your agreement to comply with the guidelines will be deemed agreement to any changes to it.



Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    I have decided to buy dbdos pro 2 for 'peace of mind' and also because xp mode is starting to make my computer run very slowly. I have got my A4 V8 working with dbdos pro 2 ie I can view and enter records (I run simple databases not sets etc) but can't seem to print to printer / email or pdf and was wondering if there is a quick fix to make this all happen. Your help will be much appreciated! Best wishes Robert

    Robert, in my opinion sending email does not constitute a weakness. I will explain further-> You could probably set it up not to receive email or to receive email and put them in trash automatically. If your xp shell is secure I can not see where sending email with content generated inside a4v8 could be a point of infection. And I view that the XP shell is secure because - you will do what is necessary to make sure your Win 7 O.S. is secure ... Right? ... :)

    Hi Jim, Thanks for your message back - I use alpha4v8 in the xp shell but I do also use the email function for sending orders which is sent to outlook and then emailed on to suppliers. Would this constitute a weakness? Like you I have no browser setup in the shell.

    Robert, A few ??? I might have you think about;
    1) if you keep your Win 7 updates and your anti virus and anti spyware up to date on your win 7 won't that insulate you from infection while running the XP shell. If you allow a browser inside the XP shell then this is probably no longer true ... but if you make them use the browser in the Win7 portion of the operating system you should not have a point of infection.
    2) In my application the operator only is allowed to do my alpha4v8 application in that XP shell. I also warned them not to load other stuff in there.

    I have done a similar setup as jimxoc. However as xp is no longer sending security updates I am looking to other ways of using A4V8. Its a little complicated but have successfully set it up in dosbox but can't print from there or produce emails or pdf. does anyone know how I might do this or is there some other program that might be better?

    I hope you already solved your problem .... :)

    But just in case ... I setup a Win 7 Pro with XP mode, and loaded A4V8 and my application under that Session. My application has reports and invoices that need to be printed. I was able to setup a HP4250 by USB connected directly to this work station to work in the XP mode and also I was able to print through my LAN to a HP7590. I tried all reports and invoices and all have worked fine. I did this about 2 weeks ago and it has continued to work (I used it every day).

    1 - Are the two motherboards and basic hardware the same between the two work stations?
    2 - Is your hardware rated for VT (virtual Tech or Virtual session)??
    - I checked the forums and found a lot of hardware issues with XP mode and VMware.??

    I setup a Win 7 Home Premium today with the latest version of VM WARE and installed winXP inside that window. I loaded my A4V8 application and redid all the mapped drives, reset all my printer drivers and ran some printing tests.

    I have 2 printers on my network. 1) lexmark laser which is connected directly to a computer on my network 2) I have an HP7590 ink jet which is connected directly 100baseT to my network.

    I was able to print without any problem to the LEXMARK ... everything worked fine. My a4v8 app. was able to see the HP7590 and I setup a printer driver to it. But I was not able to print to the HP7590 over the network. It acted like it would print to the HP but nothing every came out on the printer. I have tested the HP printer from every other true XP workstation and it prints fine from my a4v8 app. (even over the network). Also I noticed that certain longer scripts (that fly on a low power TRUE XP machine) run 10 times slower in the VMWARE window on a i53570K - 3.8ghz - 8gig win 7 machine. I will investigate a little further and see if it can be improved ... and let you-all know when I have something worth reporting.

    Ok, If I were you I'd carefully check the complete setup for the two printer drivers on the misbehaving machine. How are they different from the settings on the machine that behaves?

    There are two printers on each computer. A USB printer plugged directly into the computer and then the network printer which is installed so the client prints directly to it (no print server or shared printer). With the computer that stops printing happens it does not matter if you try to print locally or over the network.

    You might look for differences in how each of the Windows 7 Pro machines have configured their printer drivers.

    What do you mean when you say the printers are "installed locally"? Are the printers shared among the workstations, or does each workstation have their own local printer?

    - I don't know. I've tried USB printing and network printing. The other workstation works fine.

    Can she add a conventional parallel port to her system and then connect to an older printer through the parallel port?
    - No, I don't think I've seen a parallel port on a workstation in 8+ years.

    Would using a DOS emulator help? Something like DosBox, or the like?
    - I have not tried this.

    Is the O: drive local to her machine?
    - O: drive is the network drive.

    If this is on a network do other users have the same problem? If not, what's different about their configuration ?
    - Both Windows 7 Pro machines call the exact same BAT file, and the other one does not have an issue. I can't seem to identify why.
