Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    UK on line training

I have been working with Alpha for the last 3 years and now have version 7. My skills are mainly at the basic level of operations and manipulation of data. I now want to build some stand alone applications and would like to learn how to build these. The types of applications are built around basic sales and costs tables with the ability to query the datasets, print summary reports by date and category and related. All of this I do now by using the operations genies but now want to make it work by clicking a few buttons on a form. Would appreciate what you recommend I do to learn action scripting etc. Do you supply on line training?

    Kind regards

    Howard C Cox

      Howard,

If I were you I would read Dr Wayne's book xbasic for everyone as a start, there is a new version of this coming soon i believe, it cetainly helped me.

With regard to action scripting work through the examples that came with Alpha, or just try them on dummy data.

          On Line Training

Thanks for your response, but to the Pace people please note I am based in the UK and so US based courses are not an option.

          Kind regards

            Training for Alpha Five

            Hi Howard,
I understand that you are in the UK. I mentioned our online live training courses which can be delivered to anyone having a high-speed internet connection. We are currenly conducting online training for Alpha Five users in The Netherlands. We've adjusted our start time to 7 am (1 pm for them) until 2 pm EST (8 pm for them). We are using VOIP, so there's no telephone charges for international attendees. We understand the cost in coming to the states for training. That's why we found that our online live instructor-led training is the next best thing.

You can take the training in the convenience of your office or home. Our online training portal gives you the ability to see the instructor's computer (live), provide feedback regarding pace of the class, "raise hand" to ask questions, send text chat directly to the instructor or other class participants, and the instructor and other students can see your computer as well. You can even give the instructor permission to control your computer...great for demonstration purposes. When the instructor has the ability to see a participant computer...many students compare it with the instructor "looking over the shoulder" to make sure the student is moving along okay. This capability is great when students are performing the hands-on exercises and get stuck or would the instructor to "watch" them while they work.

I hope that I've answered your questions and also provided you with a venue of getting the Alpha Five training that you need...without boundaries. Take care and please do not hesitate to call or email if you have additional questions or need assistance.

            Cheers.
