I put this announcement on the Alpha 5 v6 forum an now realise that it would have been better on the announcements list.
Here is an analysis of running a query for 1.6 million records (addresses) with 12 fields that are indexed for a large client of mine in the UK. We compared 6 proprietary database packages searching by postcode and company type. E.G. Those postcodes starting with TN and all = "healthcare companies". The results reflect truly on Alpha 5 being very fast allbeit A5 took the longest initially to set up indexes..
Alpha 5 V5 = 49 seconds
Alpha 5 V6 = 46 seconds
Access 2003 = 1 minute 33 seconds
Filemaker pro = 3 minutes 21 seconds
Foxpro = 3 minutes 58 seconds
Sql Server 2000 = 17 seconds (Very complex to set up)
We did not time the indexing process but were very conscious that Alpha 5 took more time to set up indexes. The database was set up to be searchable by the recognised method of creating indexes. The field structure comprised
*businesse name
*trading name
*business category
4 address fields
*Town
*County
*Postcode
Tel
Fax
Those asterisked were indexed as these were the major most popular search fields. In the case of SQL Server 2000 programming language was required to set up indexes. Access was the quickest to index. Once Alpha 5 was set up it was the fastest to search and also the easiest to query using the intuitive wizard.
Cheers
