Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Switched from FMP or Access to A5? We need you!

As we prepare our press materials we need to be in touch with customers who know both Alpha Five and Filemaker
and/or both MS Access and Alpha Five --

If you fall in to this category and are willing to give us some feedback on certain specific questions
    PLEASE email [email protected].

Thanks in advance for any assistance

RE: Switched from FMP or Access to A5? We need you

I have done some work building applications in "MicrobeLoft Excessive" (Micro$oft Access)where I am employed (Cleveland Police Department, Cleveland, Ohio). I am currently "reinventing" all my previous work with A5v5 (What a relief. I love it!). I would be more than happy to address any questions about the (major) differences between the two (especially the extemely major problems with the admixture of different versions of MS Access on our (poorly funded) systems here at good old "Cleveland PD".

I have found myself moving from a major "PITB" (Pain In The Butt) environment with M$ Access to a "SOWAF" (Spread Our Wings And Fly!) relationship with Alpha Five and Alpha Software. I have sought and received any help I needed from the (many) resources offered by Alpha Software and the other varied Message Boards, Tech Support, and "just plain helpful" Alpha Software users (no arcane "secrets", just helpful advice).

I bought the bundled A5v5 and 3 user runtime bundle out of my own pocket just because I give a damn about our city (read major layoffs and funding cuts in the Public Safety Forces). I was willing to take a chance on Alpha Software in order to help Cleveland track and control crime. And guess what? I was right!

"Bill the Gate Keeper" may be holding developers hostage because of corporate greed, but the "Alpha Software Angels" are working out at the "give a damn" gym and getting their wings in shape to fly into a new era of cooperation between software producers and developers.

But I digress. Bottomline... I am willing to help in any way I can. I am still "on the learning curve" with Alpha Five, but I am definitely "comin' 'round the mountain".
    I remain

RE: Switched from FMP or Access to A5? We need you

        Hi Guys
I was out of circulation for a while. I am a person who has been using filemaker till now and have bought alpha five full version and 3 user runtime also from my own pocket and I have praised this software in the past to a very high level. Unfortunately , due to my tight schedules, I have continued to be on the learning curve , so I hope to join the club of geniuses here someday.
But my praise for alpha continues and it will continue to grow. The word alpha comes first in its language (like alpha, beta, gamma)and so does the software in databse design. Am I right guys??

It's all Greek to me, Alok!

I liked that. "Alpha comes first" in the Greek alphabet... What was that?... ALPHA-bet? Cool, huh? I guess Mu ( M, as in MicroSloth, comes in way down the list.)

Excellent observation, Doc. By the way, I wouldn't worry too much about us becoming "geniuses" on Alpha Software and the forum... From what I've seen so far, Alpha Five makes us look good even if we are "behind the curve" (Action Scripting, a lot of helpful folks, etc.).

But, when you do become one of the "gurus" here on the forum, I'll be sure to take advantage of your knowledge. (But please don't answer my questions in Greek!)

And you are, most definitely, right!

            Hi Gushton
It's nice to know that you are on the side of the law. By the way I am based in India.
Alpha beta gamma are used in trigonometry and thanks for your kind words. Alpha comes firts, beta comes next and then gamma and then theta, etc. So alpha software is alpha or number one in the list.
By the way, if I were to get a ticket for speeding, I hope you will help me!!!!!!

I switched from Access in the last 6 months to A5 and am based in the UK. As you can see from our website we manipulate tons of data and have found Alpha 5 to be the most stable and fastest db.

                Greetings Det. Gilbert...

I purchased A5 a while back to use at the little PD where I'm employed. There are a myriad of RMS packages out there, but I wanted something I could create/modify to fit our situation w/o having to be dependent on a service contract, etc. So far, I think I'm on the right track. I burned a lot of taxpayer dollars trying to figure out Access at a previous department and never got anywhere. I find A5 to be much more intuitive.

Let me know what you're doing with your project(s). I'd like to see how A5 is being used in the law enforcement world.

RE: Switched from FMP or Access to A5? We need you

I converted our entried records management system fron DOS based R:Base applications (which I wrote originally) to Alpha. The learning curve was relatively short since action scripting has done most of what I needed to do. We're now adding capabilities that were never possible before without extensive programming.

                      HI:

I am a school principal who has been developing with Access for a number of years and recently made the switch to Alpha due to the need for rapid WEB development which is not easily available with Access. I used ALpha some years back and have been pleased wih what I have found upon my return. I would be happy to answer any questions.

Steve - how are you planning to use the Web capabilities in a school environment?

Would you consider doing a newsletter article on this topic.

Best wishes for the holidays and WELCOME Back to the Alpha Community.

                          Richard:

This is an application that monitors students who may become academically ineligible for sports or other activities. In essence, a teacher logs on and will see a web page with all his/her students who are on probation. For each students they must indicate a current status. Once this status is recorded weekly we do an analysis to determine who will be ineligible. I expect Alpha to do all the work including printing student status reports and emailing the ineligible list to the faculty. I am developing as we speak. Once completed, I would be happy to write an article.

                              Marvin,

Sorry it took me so long to respond. I've been "out of circulation" for a bit due to several deaths in the family.
I'll be more than happy to give you what I have so far (maybe you can adapt it to your Department's needs).

I'll email you in the next couple of days with my contact info. Please bear with me (we're pretty busy here!).

Maybe we can collaborate on an application (generic or specific). I know that there are a lot of small Departments out there that can't afford the "big boys". Maybe we can help them out. My philosophy is: If it makes "the Job" any easier for a Copper, I'm willing to give away anything I have to help them accomplish it. i remain,
