Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    ON THE RADIO

    Hi All,

The federal governments is urging people to scrap Microsoft IE in favor of any other browser because of yet another flaw that could allow hackers access to sensitive information on your computer and Microsoft is NOT happy.

What browser do you use? let us know so we can drop IE

The warning was issued by US-CERT, a division of the Department of Homeland Security. However the only recomendation that I have seen is for users to exercise caution when enabling Javascript in their browser. See http://www.us-cert.gov/current/current_activity.html#iis5 for the actual warning. I did find a couple of articles online that say CERT recomended not using IE, but I can not find this actual recomendation on CERT's site.

The CERT web site (http://www.us-cert.gov/) is a very good resource for security related information and everyone would be well serverd to spend a while browsing it. They have several articles with details on how to protect your PC from many Internet attacks and viruses.

surfing with Mozilla Firefox 0.9 for the past week. I also avoid Outlook as much a possible, not because it is necessarily more flawed than other products, but because it is targeted more by folks looking to cause problems.

              Hi Paul:
I've heard great things about FireFox but haven't tried it yet.
I'm also concerned about Outlook and thought Mozilla Thunderbird looked promising. Have you tried it yet?

              Comments from others??

Installed and used it, but my email needs are rather modest. I don't know how more demanding users would rate it. Setup was a breeze, and it did what I needed.

You may want to check to see what the combined size is for the Firefox/Thunderbird downloads and compare that to Mozilla 1.7 which includes browser and email client in one package (along with a couple of other goodies.

                        RE: ON THE RADIO

I tried Firefox. Worked great for about the first week; quick, fast, speedy. Then I started getting what looked like it's screen image mixed in with the background image and a variety of different screen repaint issues. So, I quit using and went to netscape.

As I understand, Firefox is Mozilla's "beta" browser. As stated at mozill.org, "This technology preview of our award winning next generation browser is a sign of things to come from Mozilla." Then there's Mozilla 1.7, and I think Mozilla has something to do with Netscape.

                        Thank you,

Mozilla is a SUITE of programs (web browsing, email, HTML editing, IRC chat, etc), the famous Navigator, Messenger, and Composer components.
Netscape is a REPACKAGING of Mozilla with some minor changes. This is similar to StarOffice (Sun's answer to MS Office), which is a repackaged version of the free OpenOffice.
FireFox and ThunderBird are STANDALONE next-generation products that will eventually replace Navigator and Messenger in the Mozilla suite.
Also, be careful with other browsers that are out there. A lot of those browsers actually use Internet Explorer's engine to render web pages, so you will have all the associated problems with IE in those browsers.Dave
