Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

A5 Developers who need summer reading materials

This note is for those developers who like to curl with their laptop and read the Xbasic Reference Manual in PDF format. A new version is now available on the Learning Center. It is formatted to 8.5 x 11 for your printing convenience. It also has hot links to topics in the table of contents.

PS. I will produce an A4 version if anyone needs one.

That would be fantastic. Been hoping for one for A4, even though I don't use it much. I seem to have forgotten a lot of A4 so that would be great.

Russ, i believe Ed is talking about the paper size A4, not Alpha Four.

I assumed the pdf A4 manual, is this incorrect? (I've got the program, use it every day)

Sorry for the confusion. I was talking about the A4 paper size, frequently used by those on the east size of the pond.

IMHO this should not be necessary, since Acrobat allows to stretch/shrink layouts to the paper size at hand. The last 3'000+ pages I printed on A4 came out just fine - even though top and bottom margins seem a bit wider than usual. But that's great for scribbling notes on them :-)

Thanks for the links in pdf. Sure helps a great lot!

Just saw, that you already took it upon you to do it in A4 size.

                Even better so, then :-)

                Thanks

RE: A5 Developers who need summer reading material

Ed, a noble and thoughful offer but I don't believe an A4 version is necessary. Hopefully my reply comes in time to save you some work.
Metric A4 stationery is 210 mm x 297 mm. This makes it slightly larger than US 8.5 x 11 inch stationery. But this is immaterial if you are producing it in PDF format because the Adobe Reader will just rescale the image on each page if required to fit on the paper anyway. So page numbers in table of contents etc. will still be correct when printed on A4, page breaks will still be in the right place etc. The only other thing I can think of is that some printers will stop and ask for the correct sized stationery to be inserted if they detect the document's preparation stationery size is different to the stationery size in the printer tray. But again, this does not happen with the PDF format anyway. Which means that about the only downside of printing a PDF document on A4 stationery when it has been prepared for 8.5 x 11 inch is the somewhat larger white space at the bottom of each page. I can live with that.
