Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

  • And the status is?

OK, we all know Version 5 is a little behind schedule. :)

However, I feel it would be a good idea for Alpha Software to maintain a good relationship with it's customer/clients/users and at least come out with a status of Version 5. IE: What is the hold up?

Many people payed up front to get 4.5 in anticipation of v5
and to this day we still do not know when that will happen.

Nobody will be upset if Alpha Software is honest and admits there are specific problems. I don't even need an anticipated release date, but it sure would go a long way towards maintaining my faith (and others) if someone there were open enough to tell us what the obstacles are. Heck, you might even get feed back that helps you overcome those problems.

How about it Selwyn et al?

    RE: And the status is?

I agree. Good point. My guess is that it may not be an obstacle, rather a tremendous amount of code to write or re-write given the quantum leap that ver. 5 represents. Alpha may be reluctant to give another ETA, since bypassing the last several. It's been 3-years since ver 4 (I think) and though on one hand I'm chomping at the bit for ver. 5, on the other hand I don't want a buggy ver. 5 either.

An update or status of V5 would be nice for planning purposes.

        RE: And the status is?

I politely suggested almost a month ago that it would be appropriate for someone from Alpha software to make some kind of statement on this issue in the thread "Version 5 Release Date." Judging from the small number of postings to that thread (4), I would say that the delay is not a big issue among Alpha Five developers.

              RE: And the status is?

My hope is that there are new features additional to the ones listed previously for V5. I wouldn't blame them for wanting to keep those quiet.

Then again, it could be a case of "Feature Creep"

                  RE: And the status is?

Not sure what you mean by big issue, but having some kind of idea would help me tremendously as I make decisions about upgrades and changes in my current line for different customers. There is an overhead to supporting a version and I need to know how long it will be an issue and how much to invest.

I learnt a long time ago that, where customers are concerned, no news is much worse than bad news.

In case you were wondering, though, good news is best!
