Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    A5v5 Question

With the new integrated e-mail client that is coming with version 5 you will be able to create "merged" e-mail. Will it be possible to display all the related child records from a parent in the e-mail message?

We want to be able to send a teacher a listing of all the courses they have taken. You can do this easily with reports and letters, I just was hopeful that we could also do this with the e-mail merge.

    Thanks

    Dave

    RE: A5v5 Question

My impression was that we will be able to send the output of a report to an email just as we can to any oher "printer". This would probably help you. I'm really looking forward to this feature.

My personal question about the email facility is whether we will be able to send a report to each record contained in a table of email addresses. This would enable us to generate mailing lists dynamically.

Come on down to Florida. We'll pay you half as much but you won't have to shovel any snow.

Thanks guys... more snow (10 inches) due tonight!

I agree Bill, that would be a helpful feature. When I looked over the handout we got at the conference describing the new features of ver 5, I noticed that you could enter merge info, but wasn't sure if both parent and child info would both be available. I was afraid that perhaps only the first child record would be available.

Sunny Florida sounds nice this time of year... They say in Maine that there are only two season. Winter, and a month of bad sledding!

          David,

Basically, If you can print it, then you'll be able to output it to html, pdf, Rtf or text formats either in a file or to e-mail. You'll also be able to zip it up if desired.

The hockey fans up here say you can tell when it's summer by the bad ice.

David, I too found the description of the email functionality a bit cryptic. However, I have high hopes that we will be able employ xbasic methods to manipulate the email client which should open up lots of possibilities.

I understand you can attach anything that can be printed, but what I want to be able to do is include it in the body of the e-mail message. From what I hope that all the child records can be placed in the body of the message.

              Thanks

We are not as culturally forward here in Florida as you are in maine. Just the other day I asked Rabbi Bubba why this is so.

Ayuh, up herah in Maine, it's snowing wicked bad this morn'in. Was spitting snow most of yesterday! We got 'bout 6 inches today. Gonna have to send mother out to shovel the driveway while I do the roof again. T'ain't much fun! No sir, not much fun at'all.

At least while I'm housebound I can play with the "puter" and work on Alpha 5. Ayuh, it's a wicked good program!

                      RE: A5v5 Question

Does anyone know if A5V5 will incorporate on the fly concatinated keys with support for referential integrity. If memory serves me A4 had this ability. Having to create calculated concatinated keys is a PAIN and contrary to good DB design.

                        RE: A5v5 Question

In v5 the approach we have been using is

TempSavedReportName = (command to save report, with filters)
(new v5 command, to, from, re, body, attach report)

The sequence will create the report using whatever parameters you wish, open an email box (ie:outlook) with all the info you specify in the appropriate areas, and will include the report as an attachment. We send ours in PDF.
