The Alpha Software Forum Participation Guidelines

The Alpha Software Forum is a free forum created for Alpha Software Developer Community to ask for help, exchange ideas, and share solutions. Alpha Software strives to create an environment where all members of the community can feel safe to participate. In order to ensure the Alpha Software Forum is a place where all feel welcome, forum participants are expected to behave as follows:
  • Be professional in your conduct
  • Be kind to others
  • Be constructive when giving feedback
  • Be open to new ideas and suggestions
  • Stay on topic


Be sure all comments and threads you post are respectful. Posts that contain any of the following content will be considered a violation of your agreement as a member of the Alpha Software Forum Community and will be moderated:
  • Spam.
  • Vulgar language.
  • Quotes from private conversations without permission, including pricing and other sales related discussions.
  • Personal attacks, insults, or subtle put-downs.
  • Harassment, bullying, threatening, mocking, shaming, or deriding anyone.
  • Sexist, racist, homophobic, transphobic, ableist, or otherwise discriminatory jokes and language.
  • Sexually explicit or violent material, links, or language.
  • Pirated, hacked, or copyright-infringing material.
  • Encouraging of others to engage in the above behaviors.


If a thread or post is found to contain any of the content outlined above, a moderator may choose to take one of the following actions:
  • Remove the Post or Thread - the content is removed from the forum.
  • Place the User in Moderation - all posts and new threads must be approved by a moderator before they are posted.
  • Temporarily Ban the User - user is banned from forum for a period of time.
  • Permanently Ban the User - user is permanently banned from the forum.


Moderators may also rename posts and threads if they are too generic or do not property reflect the content.

Moderators may move threads if they have been posted in the incorrect forum.

Threads/Posts questioning specific moderator decisions or actions (such as "why was a user banned?") are not allowed and will be removed.

The owners of Alpha Software Corporation (Forum Owner) reserve the right to remove, edit, move, or close any thread for any reason; or ban any forum member without notice, reason, or explanation.

Community members are encouraged to click the "Report Post" icon in the lower left of a given post if they feel the post is in violation of the rules. This will alert the Moderators to take a look.

Alpha Software Corporation may amend the guidelines from time to time and may also vary the procedures it sets out where appropriate in a particular case. Your agreement to comply with the guidelines will be deemed agreement to any changes to it.



Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    A5v5 System Requirements?

    Does anyone know what the System Requirements will be for A5V5 when it EVER GETS HERE. I will be upgrading from A5V3.

    You should be more than able to run Ver 5 if you are currently running ver3. I have Win98 2E and I used the A5V5 Beta version very nicely.

      Hello!

      I see from the Alpha web sites that the official system requirements for v4.5 are basically the same as those for v4.0 and v3.0. However, I'm curious as to whether v4.5 will perform as well as v4.0 and v3.0 -given the same hardware platform.

      I see that v4.5 claims performance improvements, but I'm wondering whether the new database engine form v5.0 imposes a greater overhead load than the prior versions.

      Does anyone at Alpha or any of the v4.5 beta testers have any opinion about this?
      Are additional RAM , faster hard drives or CPUs recommended?

        I think the weakest system I have v4.5 and v5 installed on is a P5II/233MMx. It runs fine (but I like them more on my P5III/600EB for obvious reasons).

        Havent't really noticed any additional overhead problems in v4.5 or v5 betas and yes, they're great. Betas frequently run a bit slower than released versions and v5 is slightly slower in starting, switching screens, and opening code editors. The difference isn't that much and could also be due to the fact that I tend to mess up my systems every once in a while. Any slight speed difference I've noticed is insignificant and compared to the new features.

        Both versions are much more stable. We used to constantly have heap locks and other problems. They, and miscellaneous index and other problems, have all but disappeared. We've been testing v5 in a full production environment and I haven't been called to fix a heap lock or anything for a few months.

        I won't hesitate buying v5 and the v5 runtime when they become available. Probably even buy myself a copy of each.

          Hi Jim!

          Stability has been my main concern/complaint about Alpha Five v3.04b and v4.03. Version 3.04b is the most recent release of A5 that I have (as well as the last v3.0 update by Alpha).

          Early in my light testing, I found an intermittent problem with all records in a set disappearing after deleting just a couple of records. I was not using any advanced index features such as filters, etc. and I was using short names per Dr. Wayne's web site article on index corruption. I also found that reindexing the set or the tables individually did not help.

          However, when I opened the tables individually, all the records appeared! But not when I opened the set. The solution to this (at least in my case) was to pack the set. Then, all the records reappeared (except for the deleted ones, of course).

          Since this occurred in only light testing (bit only on an intermittent basis), I decided the A5 v3.04b was not suitable for developing and distributing apps to clients. (How could I explain to paying clients that, yes, their data would disappear on occasion, but that was OK - they could always pack the table to reclaim the data?)

          So I waited for A5v4. But if you search through the message board, you'll find several cases where other had the disappearing records problem in v4 (even recently). So it seemed that the intermittent problem remained and I felt I could not chance delivering A5v4 apps to clients.

          Now with the new database engine being used beginning in v4.5, I'm hoping that the stability problem will finally be resolved. It seems as if it might be based on comment by Selwyn and some beta testers.

          Stability is the most important feature that Alpha needs to add to A5v4 - more so than any of the great new features listed in the A5v5 preview docs. A5 has a great data dictionary along with field rules. This could be a great way to develop quality and full-featured apps quickly. But only if the stability is there.

            The good news is that the fault of the heap and stack overflows was likely due to the XBasic programming language itself. The most recent release, Version 6.2.0, has modifications to correct most, if not all, of these problems.

            The better news is that the XBasic programming language is freely available at http://xbasic.org/ for both the Windows and Linux environments under the GNU GPL. This should mean easy corrections to potentially difficult problems.

            The best news is that V 6.2.0 is FULLY backward compatible, so the good folks at Alpha Software should be able to use their existing source code and simply recompile using the new engine to produce a working product without the bugs inherent in the older versions of XBasic.

            As for how Alpha Software plans to distribute the corrected versions, or if they plan to offer this type of a revision to a problem created by an outside source, I haven't a clue.

            As for your statement about stability, I could not agree more. I am still waiting to get started using Alpha Five, and one of the first things that I will do once I am able to properly install the software is to run a series of tests to confirm its reliability. I would be happy to e-mail you a complete set of results on the outcome of those tests, including hardware specifications of the five machines used, if you would like them.

              Sorry, but the Xbasic language you are reading about at xbasic.org has nothing to do with Alpha Software. It is a language developed for Linux and the like and has no relationship with the Alpha 5 development software. Alpha's database language proceded that by several years I believe. They just happened to choose an identical name. If you don't see Alpha 5 listed on the web page as something to do with Xbasic, you can ignore the web page.
