Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    RE: I'm still amazed

We paid over 80 thou for a Microsoft Solution Provider (and long time programmers' tools / programming libraries developer) to convert our database to VB5 and Access. It took them over 1 1/2 years. It didn't work. It sits on a shelf someplace (we don't even know where anymore).

I upgraded v1 to v4.03 (now over 125M of definitions, code, and layouts) while adding a lot of new features, more functionality, and improving overall efficiency on the floor, in about 6 months.

While I haven't had time to go through a lot of the new features in v5 beta, some web stuff is in there. We've had v4.03 successfully set up on a Cold Fusion 4.5 server (don't know the specifics other than you have to get the Fox Pro ODBC driver off the Win 95 CD). When I have time I'll be getting in to seeing what can be done and (hopefully) writing a few scripts and operations to automatically convert A5 form layouts to Cold Fusion's internal language. The final working version will, of course, be posted in the Code Archives for all to play with.

I'm no insider but I have read that version 5 will include many internet features.

    Regarding Palm pilots -
I am blending Alpha Five and HandDbase successfully. Palm pilots are totally different from Alpha five databases. However HandDbase is a relational database product sort of like a mini Alpha Five. I run the HandDbase app from Alpha Five. So far I have a script that converts a hotsynched HandDbase file to A CDV file, imports that into an Alpha Five table where I can make any necessary corrections, and appends the ok'd data to my billing application. Next I want to create a schedule app so I can export Alpha schedules into the Palm. I just wish I had more time to work on it...

In short - it can be done now.

started a topic I'm still amazed

    I'm still amazed

I started a new database developement on Monday and by Wednesday have it in operation. I used very little code on this relational accounting program. I have two links--a one to many and a 1 to 1. And it works! I have multiple users using the unlimited runtime package. I'm still amazed at how easy (tedious but easy) it is!

There are sooo...many Access programmers out there but they will take forever to do a project like this. In fact, this new Alpha DB is replacing an Access DB because it never worked quite right and was a pain to modify.

By keeping code to a minimum, mine is a cinch.

Okay, enough braging. It would be nice in the next version to address some form of internet access to Alpha DBs. You know, something that you don't have to be a guru to develop. Also (Selwyn are you listening) we're really missing a bet to not have an application package for the Palm Pilot series of PDAs. Maybe something that would automatically sync with the Pilot both ways. That would be dynomite!

Sorry, just wanted to brag and beg a little. I feel better now.
