Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    SEO

Hi, I'm an end user of Alpha Five. I'm not a programmer but I've used Alpha for many years and on occassion pay one of the people from the message board to create an Alpha application for me.

I've been looking for a good SEO (search engine optimization) person I trust the people in the Alpha community so I'm wondering if there's anyone who has an SEO skill set. (or if you know of anyone reputable)

    Thank You
    Arnie

    Re: SEO

    Hello Arnie,

I see you have not had a reply as yet to your question. SEO is one area in which I do have some small knowledge (self taught). It has been a matter of self defence over the years to learn how to maximise website exposure. You have two options:

    1. Go to somewhere like Scriptlance or FreeLancer or oDesk (google search on "bid for programmers")
and post your project. I've had mixed results in this, from excellent to b*** terrible. The issue here is that you must be totally clear (and complete) in your project requirements/specifications. The drawback with SEO is that it can take some months before you see real results and this makes it hard to quantify the real value of this approach. One downside is that you are then pretty much dependent on outside help to make any significant changes to your website. It is also generally a quite expensive method.

    2. Learn how to do it yourself. It really isn't as difficult as some people (with vested interests) like to make out; more a matter of common sense and experimentation - assuming you know something about web design and HTML. Content is the key to SEO. You must give your prospective customers some real reason to find you, and relevant content - with proper attention to keywords and search phrases applicable to your business - will do this. It's a bit simplistic, but that basically is what SEO is all about - giving people a means to find you!

There are all sorts of help mediums available to assist you in this and a Google on "SEO optimisation" will provide a large number of resources. Just don't believe everything you read!! It is almost impossible to reach No 1 on Google for a search phrase (especially in high useage) in 10 days, and for $19.99!!

Hope that helps ... and have fun learning.

      Re: SEO

You have to take Ron's suggestion #2 even if you continue to look for someone to run it for you. It is so easy to get rooked by a "SEO Expert". Look for articles on SEO myths, avoid hype, avoid anyone who will 'get you in the top ten rank', or trade links, etc. Don't pay up front, don't even trust reports showing how they improved your ranking. A scammer can make it appear they have improved your ranking and show 'valid' hits on your website and responses to your emails. There is a whole industry where individuals are paid to hit your website, or use software that automatically hits your site, making it appear to be more popular.

        Re: SEO

I have achieved First page on google(and most others) in a few weeks. Look it up, it is still there and has been for years. It was tricky and I found out how by sheer accident doing as Ron said. I make software for the car industry to replace their ups log(paper sheets) and keep better records.

Upslog and lotrun - lotrun is the name of the site

Call me at 352-302-2015 or email at [email protected] . I will tell you how it was done. NO CHARGE!

*NOTE: Being at the top of google and all the search engines does not always equate to higher traffic on your website, but it does help make the ones who go there do it for the right reason. This website has had thousands of hits, but very few were for the right reason and of those few, even fewer were wanting the product for the right reason. The best way to get responsive hits is advertising in the right market. I am in the auto industry, so advertising in the right publications gives me a steady number of calls(when the industry is strong) and a percentage of those hit the website. I still think the best hits are because of the advertising. People think they are getting a better deal if they can see it on a web page.
