Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Report Writer

I am in the process - infant process - of learning Alpha Five and developing an app.

Is there an end-user report writer tool in Alpha Five? Many of the reports we need in this app or "spur of the moment" requests; thus, the need for the end user to be able to create a report at runtime.

    thanks,

I believe you can purchase run time with the ability to let end users design their own reports.

      Re: Report Writer

The runtime does have the ability for the end user to make a report. The developer does have to set this up in advance. Developer specifies many things.

There are a few people on here that are pretty well versed with this and I suggest you post in the appropriate forum so they are more likely to see it. Explain in more detail what you need so they can better help.

I never use this because it can require a lot of extra time by the developer teaching the user how to use it and sometimes fixing the mess after(bad data, etc).

            Hi Raul,

Dave is right about the developer setting this up right for the end user. The main issue is that you would only want the end user to be able to create reports for themselves and not write over any you created for them.

I have done this and it takes a lot of understanding from the PDF document that comes with the Runtime.

Let me know when you get the runtime and I shall try and help you.

Sorry Keith. I just hadn't seen you post much here. Please take no offense. I had earlier suggested he post his query in the proper section for his version of alpha. I was thinking he would get more/better response is all.

                      Dave,

I think I know you well enough that no offence was meant and on my part none was taken.

Sometime it is hard to decide where to ask a question on the forum. I would recommend that any question about how to use the software should be posted in the section, that the version and type of application best fit into.

everyday I am a little better at this.
I have purchased the runtime module for end users and if you could guide me as to where to set it up so that end users could create their reports that will be a great help.

                        Thanks,

                          Hi Raul,

Now that you have purchased the Runtime, unzip it on you machine first. In the folder find the RuntimeDocumentation.pdf.

Pages 12-17 show you exactly what needs to be done. You may need to read through it several times and also practice a little but it does all work.
