Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Type of web applications that should be avoided with Alpha Five

    .
    Hello,
Alpha Five is excellent for data-driven web and desktop applications. What I'd like to know, and therefore avoid, is: What type of (mainstream) web applications is Alpha Five 10.5 not suited for and would be better if they were developed in Java, .NET or PHP? Thank you for your opinions.

    Best regards,
    Felix

I don't think there is anything you could not build in Alpha Five, especially if you include V11 coming on board shortly. The difference is not the tool, Alpha can cut it. It normally is where the existing Templates and resources reside and your access to skilled developers. Like this Message Board -- you could build it in Alpha, but it would be a waste since you can get the code for free in PHP and fire it up in an hour. I could build something on the scale of dell.com or bofa.com in Alpha, but it would take me a couple years on my own and I certainly would not have the required security skill for the banking website.

Here are a couple things that Alpha does not do right now:

    - virtual hosting (although you can approximate it with "instances")
    - rigerous protection from DDOS attacks
    - "friendly URL's" that are popular on shopping websites or blogs

Today in Web you can combine different platforms. Take a look for example http://alphasoftware.co.uk site. It is a Alpha10 site BUT some of pages are coming from php servers (blog) and asp servers(products)

I think it is not a question today to focus 100% to Alpha. You can get more out of Alpha if you combine your skills in php (or asp or asp.net) with Alpha.

For example registration process is "easy" to handle with php tools(or asp or asp.net) and building a backend admin is also quit easy with php. Also forms(dialogs) where you collect data are good choices to use php tools. There are also several ready to go shopping carts in php.

All this means you HAVE TO use sql backend with Alpha (also SQL security) and a "shadow php server".

You can also protect Alpha from DDOS attacks if you use Alpha behind Proxy. You need also an extra firewall to avoid direct use of Alpha behind Proxy. One big advantage of using Alpha behind Proxy is that you can use Proxys https with Alpha. So http and https connections are both possible with single Alpha server (which is running http).

So use Alpha together with other platforms then you do not have to code so much yourself.

        Steve,
        Ken,
Thank you for your opinions. So although other platforms can offer ready-made (or easily adaptable) solutions, I'm happy these could also be built with Alpha Five, with the necessary time and skills. Of course, another issue/thread/discussion is the "why" one would choose that path.

My answer would be use Alpha if you want to develop a powerful data-driven web site with a fast & very flexible RAD tool. If the site is not data-centric, don't use Alpha.
