Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Reset root password in MySQL (WIN XP)

I am not sure if this is the best place to post this information... but i wanted to help anyone who is struggling with this problem.

I spent way too many hours trying to install and work with MySQL (Windows XP). It was VERY frustrating. The problem was with the root password. For some reason, probably a mistake that I made...
the root password was rejected by MySQL when I tried to build a connection.. or anything else.

I am very new to MySQL so I figured... ok... i'll just mess around, find the place where I can reset the password... and i'll be on-my-way...

Nope... you have to uninstall MySQL the reinstall and reconfigure...
So... I uninstalled MySQL and reinstalled... didn't work!!!!

After MANY hours I sent an eMail to Steve Workings (I was working my way through his excellent 'XBasic for Web' lessons). He responded very quickly... I LOVE this forum!...

Steve pointed me in the right direction & after an hour or so I came up with the following:

    1) use Control Panel -> Admin -> Services to stop the MySQL service

    2) run the MySQL install program (i'm using version 5.5.16)

    3) select 'uninstall' from the first dialog

    4) delete the 'MySQL\MySQL Server 5.5' directory from the Program Files... a reboot may be necessary... even then i was forced to drag some of the files to the desktop & delete from there

    5) use the windows explorer to delete all MySQL Server directories from \Documents and Settings\AllUsers\Application Data

    6) similarly, remove these directories from \Documents and Settings\'USERNAME'\Applicationn Data
    7) reboot

    8) use Run -> Regedit.exe -> find to find & remove all entries with MySQL BUT !!! NB! be careful to avoid removing any MySQL entries related to Toad or Workbench

    9) reboot

    10) reinstall MySQL

    11) celebrate!

I hope this information helps those of you who may be having similar problems.

Re: Reset root password in MySQL (WIN XP)

Ran into the exact same thing. I had the password working in Alpha, and with Navicat, so I still had access, but neither would tell me what the password was without encryption. (At least I didn't figure out how.) I do keep a record with almost all my passwords so I can refer to it if I need to, but I did not put the MySQL password in there for some reason.

I didn't think the uninstall and reinstall process was so bad, though I may have missed the regedit part. (I would probably have used the Norton 360 registry cleanup.) But other then reinstalling it to a bad location, again, everything went fine. I did use Navicat to back up my database first.

But I have since ran into this: http://www.tech-faq.com/how-do-i-res...-password.html

How to Reset a MySQL Password

A MySQL password can be reset in 5 easy steps:

      Stop the mysqld daemon process.
Start the mysqld daemon process with the skip-grant-tables option.
Start the mysql client with the -u root option.
      Execute the UPDATE mysql.user SET Password=PASSWORD(password) WHERE User=root;
      Execute the FLUSH PRIVILEGES; command.

These steps reset the password for the root account to password. To change the password for a different account or to set a different password, just edit the variables in single quotes in step 4.

If the user knows his/her existing MySQL root password, steps 1-3 are not necessary.
Unfortunately I don't know if this is just for Unix though, because I found similar steps for Unix on another site.

Re: Reset root password in MySQL (WIN XP)

When I upgraded form 5.1 to 5.5 all I did was the following:
        1. Backup up projects w. Navicat - i.e. "Dump SQL file"
        2. Uninstall 5.1
        3. Install 5.5
        4. Run Navicat and "Execute SQL file"

        That's it.

Oh, maybe I created a "new database" for each project first w. Navicat (can't remember). Of course, a "new db" in Navicat is more or less a folder of sorts structure within Navicat.
