Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Alpha Five in Spain: anybody?

    .
    Hello,
I am starting as an Alpha Five developer in Spain. Alpha Five is quite unkown in Spain, so I figure potential clients will reasonably ask the following question:
    .
Apart from you, who else in Madrid, Spain can maintain/upgrade my application?
    .
I would like to know if there are other Alpha Five developers in Spain, especially in Madrid, where I am based.
    .
    .
    Thank you,
    Felix

    Hola,
    .
    .
    Muchas gracias,
    Felix

Re: Alpha Five in Spain: anybody?

    I think this is a non-issue.
If you tell your client that the project will run on a SQL server a lot of concern should/will be gone. Obviously the front end code is important but would you like to jump into someone else's code in whatever language?

Some customers ask me: what if something bad happens to you ? Well I think it does not matter. Suppose the customer chooses to work with a large company; what will happen when the guy in charge of the customer's project within that company quits his job? A colleague will take over? Probably for the sake of continuing the business but it will be a very similar experience like the customer would have with a one men company all of a sudden fading away. As a one men company you have far more to offer to a customer then a large software company; dedication & passion! Smart customers know that! I'm not talking about corporate m$ projects of course & I wouldn't want to be part of it either.

Alpha Five in Spain: anybody? --> emotional issue

      .
      Frank,
Thank you for your thoughts. I agree with you that having data in a SQL database provides the client with a lot of safety through standardization. I also agree with you that working on another person's code is a big hassle. And finally I also agree that if the person in charge of the project goes away, it can be like starting from square one. The issue is rather of an emotional nature.
      .
      - Feel-safe factor: The client feels he is on more solid footing, whatever that may mean, if he can get hold of other developers to continue/maintain/upgrade his application in case something goes wrong. He'll want a developer who's close at hand and, muy importante, speaks Spanish.
      - Often, on the client's side, you've got the bad cop who will try to find any excuse to create Fear-Uncertainty-Doubt. Possibly because he's got other vested interests.
      .
As you probably know, even with smart, reasoning people, it's difficult to use logic to do away with negative emotions. They're humans, after all, and we've got 21% unemployment here in Spain (this is not a typo).

      Regards,
      Felix

IADN has three individuals listed in Spain (excluding those on this post). If you want me to email them, send me what you an to say. Do you want me to expand the search to neighboring countries?

Great that I'm not the only person involved with Alpha Five in Madrid. If any prospective client ever asks about other Alpha Five developers, I'll be happy to be able to firmly say that in Madrid there are more of us.

                          .
                          Steve,
Thank you for the information and the offer. Alpha Five in Spain is quite unknown and potential clients want to know who else they could turn to should they want their application be maintained or modified by another developer. They also want that other person to be in the same city (in this case, Madrid) and not 600km/400miles away (for example, in Barcelona). If you have names of Alpha Five developers in Madrid, I would be grateful to know them.

                          Regards,
