Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Build Notes

More a comment than a question.
I've been using a Table within some of the apps. I'm working with which has a list, by date, of the ideas, problems and resolutions.
This is so I can track back as to why I did something, and to record ideas for future development. The ideas often arrive when I'm doing something else and need to finish it.
It's also helpful when advising users of new/different features.
    Anyone else use this approach?

Apologies to anyone I haven't managed to upset yet.
You are held in a queue and I will get to you soon.

    Re: Build Notes

    Ted,
I am using something similar like you described.
The purpose is to record changes so that I can keep track of the changes.
That info is also available to users under a button "Version" on the main menu.
Attached a form with an example.

        Re: Build Notes

        Ted,

The example form in my post is just what the user get's to see. There is much more to it, such as:
        - management form to create a new build record with detailed information
        - optional support for 3 languages
        - setting of default language
        - activation of new build
        - automatic refresh of shadows
This version/build management module is part of commercial development and is currently operational in 2 companies that have one or more applications for which I take care of the maintenance. It helps me organizing maintenance activities and keeping track of the changes. Furthermore the clients/users are able to follow updates to their applications.

As for your question, I would suggest to discuss terms of availability of the idea/solution offline.

Thanks Jo, not planning to go into it that deeply. Thanks anyway.

            Re: Build Notes

I built an app in 10.5 that I was really not happy with, so I decided that I would rebuild it from scratch with 11, using everything I have learned. But this time around I started 2 text files under Open Office. The first is notes of everything I have done as I do them. It keeps track of my development, plus I put in notes of things that need my attention. I simply put a star next to anything I need to go back to. I don't know why I didn't think of keeping the records in Alpha itself. Especially with the ability to filter out the notes to find what still needs my attention.

              Re: Build Notes

It's easily possible to have a diary of events as well. Things tried and bits of code off the forum which you want to try.
Keeps it all in one place and as you say, can be categorised by priority. I have a "Too Difficult" flag.
Another thing I have started doing, is to have a Button similar to Alpha for reporting bugs and suggestions. Mails the info straight to me. I've not added the functionality to capture the environment data yet, so that's in the list of things to complete.
