Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Connection String

I've been working with desktop apps, now wanting to make headway in web apps, taking the tutorials.

The tutorial directs you to a Northwind Access database that ships with Alpha Five, and demonstrates setting up the connection string.

I test connection string to Northwind (which is located where tutorial says it should be). The connection string is:
    {A5API=Access,FileName='C:\Program Files\a5V10\MDBFiles\Northwind.mdb',UserName='Admin'}

    I get the following error:

Unable to connect. Database API specific error
Your database has returned the following error code and description to Alpha Five. Consult your database documentation for further information.
160 - 'Specified driver could not be loaded due to system error 14001 (Microsoft Access Driver (*.mdb, *.accdb)). SQL State is: IM003

I DO NOT HAVE MICROSOFT ACCESS. Been using Alpha Five for over 5 years now. MDAC/Windows DAC does not resolve. It's beginning to look like I need to have Microsoft Access (which can ONLY be purchased as part of the business suite). I'm hoping this is not the case. Still need to get through the tutorials, they're very well put together, but at a roadblock early on.

    Re: Connection Strinig

You don't need Access. I just added the Northwind.mdb to a desktop database, genie building the connection string

    {A5API=Access,FileName='C:\Program Files\a5V10\MDBFiles\Northwind.mdb',UserName='Admin'}

Check your Start menu, Settings, Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Data Sources (ODBC), and see if you see something like my screenshot.

        Re: Connection Strinig

If you see that the Access driver is present on your machine. You don't need to add anything. The problem lies somewhere else.

I googled "error 14001 (Microsoft Access Driver (*.mdb, *.accdb))" but all the threads related seem to be in French?

In my research, I keep finding comments re: side-by-side configuration regarding system error 14001
See it again on the page below:

          http://www.techtalkz.com/windows-98-...14001-a-2.html

System error code 14001 means "The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect. Please see the application event log for more detail." This error code may also display as "ERROR_SXS_CANT_GEN_ACTCTX" or as the value 0x36B1.

Any ideas about how to resolve?

              Re: Connection String

Try connecting to the northwind.mdb through one of your desktop databases and see what happens.

Alpha Control Panel, New Table, Active Link Table, Create single.... button.
Use the Build button, in the File Name: box navigate to C:\Program Files\a5V10\MDBFiles\Northwind.mdb, select it, use the Open button.
              Use the Test Connection button.

I get the same error. This is it in it's entirety in case I didn't include ALL of it previously:

Unable to connect. Database API specific error
Your database has returned the following error code and description to Alpha Five. Consult your database documentation for further information.

                  Re: Connection String

I found through continued research that the Event logs, accessed in the Event Viewer in Admin Tools in Vista, would be invaluable. I found the following error, recurring during my attempts to set up connection string.....

Activation context generation failed for "C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\MICROS~1\OFFICE14\ACEODBC.DLL".Error in manifest or policy file "" on line . A component version required by the application conflicts with another component version already active. Conflicting components are:. Component 1: C:\Windows\WinSxS\manifests\x86_microsoft.vc90.crt_1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b_9.0.30304.0_none_d9c474bda3593bfa.manifest. Component 2: C:\Windows\WinSxS\manifests\x86_microsoft.vc90.crt_1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b_9.0.30729.1_none_e163563597edeada.manifest.

...And the ACEODBC.dll is the MS Access Driver according to the following statement (with link)

At this link, http://www.justaprogrammer.net/2011/...ess-installed/ I found the following statement that says ACEODBC.dll is the Access Driver:
After a lot of searching and frustration I eventually had an epiphany. The provider name I was using to create the database was Microsoft Access Driver (*.mdb). This provider name refered to ODBCJT32.DLL, which is only available as a 32 bit version. However, the driver that ships with the Access 2010 redistributable is called ACEODBC.DLL. This dll has a provider name of Microsoft Access Driver (*.mdb, *.accdb).

So Components 1 and 2 are clashing. ??? I'll keep looking for what to safely do about this, but if someone is familiar, I would be grateful for your input.

After checking the event log, (Event Viewer in Admin Tools, it kept leading back to the side-by-side configuration error. Found the fix here:

I rather lost track of this when it quickly got over my head.

Thank you for posting the solution you reached. It will likely be beneficial to others.

Stan, thanks. Actually, of the 4 steps in the solution, I needed only complete the 1st two steps of deleting and reinstalling the Redistributables since I don't have Access 2010. The clash was resolved and Northwind Database works in Alpha perfectly now. I appreciate your efforts.
