Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Re: Intranet Solution

There's a really neat website named Google where you can search for

    Alpha Five Intranet

and find all sorts of links related to the topic.
    There can be only one.

Roman - In my humble opinion Alpha is probably ideal for intranets - started out with the same intent myself. Nice thing about doing something internal is that you generally don't have the same security concerns as you might have with a full web app. Also, its possible to mix an match with desktop runtime if you need to. If you come from a vb background, its probably easier to code up something in xbasic desktop and although the web components are slick, the direct access to the operating and file system can be useful and simpler, particularly if you have to interface with other file based apps or info.

I invested in one of those version V10 "deals" that included the Developer, Runtime and one app server licence. Huge flexibility and it will give you a chance to learn. However, even internally, you will quickly see the advantage of a browser based solution - no client install. Lots of info here on the forum, but needs a bit (well maybe a lot) of searching around.

Maybe another "bundle deal" on V11 components will emerge in due course.

Anyway - Stick with it and you will succeed

          Re: Intranet Solution

The first big web app I built was for internal use by a manufacturing company, so in that sense it was an "intranet" application. Most users accessed the app over the LAN, but once it was running, they quickly realized that their two other locations, salesmen in the field, executives on a junket to Europe, people on vacation who were needed for a problem, could also access it from where ever they were. So, "intranet" solutions have a tendency to become "web" apps very quickly.

Web apps are available anywhere there is an internet connection. Now, with mobile capabilities, the app is available anywhere you can "hear me now"!

            Okay,

I have my intranet working well over our LAN (MS server 2008), is there some magical button I have to press to make it accessible on the web?

              Lance,

Not sure I follow you? If you want to access a browser based app on your intranet, after you have published the files to your server where the WAS is running, just type in \\server_name.

If you want it on the web, you need a DNS configuration.

But you probably already knew that. So if your question is about network settings maybe someone else can help you.
