Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Camtasia Studio?

    Camtasia Studio?

I need to do some video editing. I did the trial of Adobe Premiere Elements and I hate it. So I'm looking at Camtasia Studio, which is what it sounds like most folks use.

My question - I'm seeing prices all the way from 136.54 at Seaboom.com to $300 at Camtasia. I don't usually see such a wide spread. Does anybody have any advice? It looks like Seaboom used to be futurepowerpc.com and has lots of negative reviews. Where do other folks find the best price for Camtasia, at a reputable seller?

    Re: Camtasia Studio?

Whenever you see a ridiculously low price, its a one-user license off a X00-User Educational/Government only version, or an upgrade, or an old version you cannot upgrade. The ads are carefully worded! I paid the $299 for my copy.

Some of my complaints about Camtasia are:

    - Starts to choke on projects over one hour. Might be fixed by adding more memory but I have four GB already.
    - Cannot directly edit video created from GoToMeeting. I have to re-record the entire session by playing the GoToMeeting video while recording my screen in Camtasia.
    - Takes simply forever to render and publish to the web. Figure three hours for a one-hour video. Maybe all editors have this problem.
    - Doesn't have any automatic audio editing like find and remove all "umms", long silences, etc. Means I have to painstaking review and edit each video.

    Things I like about Camtasia:

    - Works very well other than the notes above.
    - I can easily add table of contents, zoom in/out, callouts, insert audio (e.g. background music) and play with the audio level.
    - Is pre-configured to publish to Screencast or YouTube, I am sure Facebook is on the way.

      Re: Camtasia Studio?

      Steve,

Thanks. That's very helpful. I'm frequently recording via GotoMeeting, even if I'm just meeting with myself!

I did just discover that the Windows Media File Editor that comes with Windows is a very easy way to edit a wmv recording. I don't know if you can splice one back together, but I just used it to cut an over long one into pieces. It was fast and easy. Even if you wanted to do more fancy editing with Camtasia or something, it might help you to cut them down to size first.

        Wendy,

Steve is right, I was victim of a scam for Camtasia on Amazon, luckily Amazon reimbursed me. I finally bought it here http://www.1forallsoftware.com/camtasia/index.htm because you get a load of extras. I searched very intensively but I could not find any better deal. I like the program and especially their codecs are outstanding. It is overpriced though but as long as it works for them we can only pay. 229 euros will convert to 300$

I'd be kinda curious if any of you guys who are already familiar with Camtasia could take a look at Adobe Premiere Elements. What I didn't like about it is that when you hit the pause and start buttons, it seems to take awhile, which I found frustrating. But I was working on a recorded meeting that was over an hour, so it might not be that much different. And - it's $100, not $300. Maybe I'm too quick to dismiss it based on that initial frustration.

And - I was able to import the WMV directly into Adobe.

            Hi Wendy,

If you are talking about video editing and a PC, I highly recommend a version of Sony Vegas Video. Camtasia is good for screen capture, and simple edits, but Vegas is the closest program I know to being intuitive yet powerful for Video Editing. I recommend at least the Platinum 11 version. Download the 30 day free trial to really test it yourself. I'd call it the Alpha Five of Video Editing.

              Ira,

I checked out Vegas. For someone just editing, they have a nice range of options. Their $60 version looks to be every bit as good as Adobe's $100 software. I also downloaded the trial of Camtasia and in spite of it being the most expensive of the ones I've looked at, I'll go with that. I want to be able to do screen recordings (didn't see that in any of the Vegas offerings), and I liked the way Camtasia has that set up. I liked their custom window size where I can know I'm recording the same width and height window every time. So, I have to save up a wee bit more to do it, but I'll go with that when I'm ready. For now, the 30 day trial will handle my immediate needs.

Get SnagIt from the same company. A very intuitive and easy to use graphic editor. Its how I grab all screenshots for user guides, etc.

Yes. I've been using Techsmith's Jing for quite awhile.

Have been using Camtasia since 2002. Must say they are progessive like alpha. Latest version is about the best of all the screen capture programs I have come across.. Bigest issue is memory hungary - but what isn't. The real great thing is their suite of free tutorial videos to look at. Makes yu a professional user in next to now time.
