Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Desktop to web, dbf to mysql

I have a desktop app that is about 160 tables, 1 which is over 200 mb in size. Since everything was going web I figured I would start learning to create a web app to take the place of our desktop app. I was looking at making the web app a small part at a time. So a user only had to do one small item they could do on web or desktop while the web app was being developed. I figured the first thing to do was to change from dbf table to mysql. After much work cleaning up the dbf tables to be able to export to sql I have finally gotten the upsize genie to work with not too many errors that I can straigten up or figure out. When trying to use my desktop app with all active link tables it is verrrrry slow and a lot of errors now pop up. I think I can work around the errors but it looks like when you are doing a query, alpha is trying to download the complete table from the sql db before it tries to do the query instead of doing the query with the sql db.

    Now my questions,
Is there something I can do to speed up my desktop with using mysql instead of my dfb tables?

If I start developing the web application with the dbf tables how hard would it be to change that over to sql once I have it working good enough were we would not have to use the desktop app w/ dbf tables?

Would I be better developing the web applicaton with sql and wait until it is up to where the desktop app is and then make a total switch?

There is a lot of good discussion about dbf to MySQL in the web forums. You can search there for more, but basically, do not use active link tables, therefore, do not use the upsize genie.

Alpha has a very good export to SQL routine. Take your "toe in the water" table and export it to MySQL, then build a connection string to connect to it directly. That is blazingly fast. Get a tool like Toad or Navicat to manage the MySQL implementation and build some indexes, then start your select and update queries.

Also, help is available if it seems too slow. A lot of us learned the hard way and can get you started quite a bit faster. Check out the consultants at IADN.

What version of Alpha are you using? If you are already at 10, or better yet 11, then convert a bit at a time. If you are on 9 or before and want to move to 10 or 11 at the same time, then start fresh, do the whole thing and publish all at once.

Pat, thanks for the answer. I will do some searching in the web forums. The neat thing about this forum is at the bottom of the page there are always a lot of links that help. Wish I could figure out how to get

I have v11 & that is what I used for the upsize genie.

When you say "blazingly fast" are you referring to desktop or web?

Pat means that a direct connection to SQL is much, much faster data-access than using ActiveLink tables.

Is it fairly easy to do away with activelink tables in a desktop app?

Re: Desktop to web, dbf to mysql

We know that direct connection to MySQL table is faster but I think Jack wants to know whether a desktop application that is using a form and a browse is possible to create without using an active link table (that is, connecting directly to the MySQL table). If this is possible, how?

AFAIK, Alpha Five does not provide UI to select a non-dbf table when creating a form. It also does not expose a property where we can change the base table so that it can be changed to a MySQL table.

If we eliminate the use of active link tables then we should only use web components on our desktop application or create only web applications.

Pat, please let us know if this is what you mean when you said "do not use active link tables".

Create windows desktop applications using pure web components.

yes use the wcd for desktop use it on the lan and if you want you can publish to the server make them available on the browser
              thanks for reading

Re: Desktop to web, dbf to mysql

DBF desktop is much faster than MySQL web.
MySQL active link tables are much slower than DBF.
You can use xdialog directly w. MySQL, but that is painful (to code).
So, yeah, WCD is a viable alternative but it puts you in the same boat as straight web design. But you have to build something before you can use it.

What we do (on a large VFP conversion project) is run scripts automatically updating MySQL from VFP DBF each night. That way the two systems live in data harmony as the new system is being built. But you gotta code the scripts, yet another "roadblock" to paradise.
