Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Purchasing Alpha 5 V11 web developer and new training video offer

I have had several emails from Alpha offering various bundle offers.
The one I would like to buy is $139 for two web developer licenses and a free copy of the new web training video.
I get so far with the order only to be informed that I must buy through the UK site.
OK, so I link to the site but no bundle offers are available. Only blanket full retail prices for products in inflated sterling equivalents.
Why am I being penalized for living in the UK?

Is there a way around this?

Don't even live in the UK myself and I get the same effect. Give the lads a call or email sales directly. You never know what might be possible.

Yeah, I'll try tomorrow, it being Sunday today.
It is just so frustrating - I have always dealt directly with Alpha in the US with no problem, so why all of a sudden do I have to pay over the odds to cover the expenses of the third party "Avanquest". Why do they need them? Does Alpha have a UK presence that they have to cover the costs for? I know there is some Access convert company over here that has Alpha based software ties to the Houses of Parliament. They seem to have recently assumed the guise of fronting Alpha in the UK, but I for one have not seen any benefits of this. Apart from the UK version of the web site I can't see any other changes... So, what difference does it make if I buy directly from the US?

Agree with you - but give them a call.

I'm from a place in Ireland called County Offaly. Barack Obama claims to have roots in Ireland and in a town in Offaly in particular. I wonder if this might give me some sort of scope to claim the right to buy from the US Alpha Site .... No. didn't think so. Some discount then? ... Ah Guys

          Mr Neale -
I doubt it, sir. But it might lead about half of Americans to ask it you might have a spare bedroom, so we might send him back... (evil grin)

Perhaps you might get the same discount that we're about to get on our taxes?? (grin)

And there is no intent to start a political discussion, etc. Just being a smart aleck.... (grin)

No matter who the politician is in question - 50% of the people aren't going to like them....

Interesting idea - now if he claimed to have roots in my fathers home town of Strabane in the north I might have a chance...

I emailed Alpha asking for an explanation but no one has had the courtesy to get back to me, meanwhile I continue to get these offer emails from them, the latest one ironically saying that the offer ends today:
"Ends Today: Alpha Five v11: Get an Extra License, New Training Video, and Buy Back Credit"

Same problem for me when I wanted to by a server license. Redirect to UK Site Not same price. So, no Server license. I believe the UK office for A5 have the right to sell all from Europe. Add they get the information from your home address you have in A5 when you did the registration?

Best not to interject a political comment if your "intent" is not to make a political comment. We like to keep this board focused on Alpha, not politics.

Peter - honest to garsh no political ill will intended. I treat all politicians with equal disdain. No real use for any of 'em. I tried to indicate that it was just a lame attempt at humor - Obviously I wasn't entirely successful. So in an effort to be completely clear - I INTENDED NOTHING but general lame humor (akin to lawyer jokes, programmer jokes, etc.) by the stuff above. I intended nothing more or less than that. It was early morning here and my sense of humor was likely on the "too daring" side....

My apologies to any that I may have offended. And please accept the fact that it wasn't intended to be offensive or out of line. Just lame humor.

No problem, Jeff. I'm not offended. It's just that we all (or, at least, many of us) have strong political opinions. There are a million message boards and places to comment on politics. We want to keep it clean on this board. Politics, religion, etc all evoke strong views and feelings that are appropriately expressed on other forums. I accept that your remark was innocent. But we have seen on occasion where one comment can go off on a heated tangent. Thanks for your explanation.

No doubt that it can, sir. I'll try to avoid stuff that can be a "potential ignition source" in the future. Not trying to make your job as a mod any harder than it already is. That's for sure.

                        Thanks!

Have not received a reply from Alpha customer support or even an acknowledgement of my contact with them
I emailed Richard Rabins directly, he has not passed on my issue to customer support and has not replied to my email either.
I have also placed a query on the Alpha linked in group to see if I can get some sort of response.
I guess I'll just have to wait and see.
Are there no other UK developers who see this as unjust?

All sorted, thanks Brett at Alpha... His recent email detailed below:

                            Paul

                            "Hi Paul,

We are actually in the process of getting this switched over, so that existing customers are still able to order directly through us.

With our partnership with Avanquest, it has mainly been focused on new customer acquisition, and having a direct UK link has been extremely helpful. Unfortunately certain aspects have not run quite as smooth as we would like, but like I said, it is something that we are working on.

In the interim, if there is anything that you would like to order, simply drop us an e-mail at [email protected] and we will take care of that for you. (I understand that it is not the most convenient, but if you can bear with us, that would be great)

Yes, you can certainly post on the message board, and I will give you a call back shortly to get this taken care of for you.

                            Thanks

                            Brett"

                              Hi Paul,

Only just seen your post. I also got the same emails and redirect. I agree that the situation was not acceptable and hence I did not buy a price inflated upgrade because I am located in the UK (Surrey).

I have also purchased products and services via the US without problem and at an equitable rate why should it have changed.
Glad to see you have a positive response from Brett.

                              Thanks for following this up.
                              Regards
