Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Videos for Emails in Alpha?

Are there any videos that demonstrate how to use the power of incoming Emails to an Alpha application.

At the moment, I cant get off the ground even retrieving emails from the server.

Can you send e-mails out using the Alpha Five built in client Keith?
I had trouble with V9 working with WLM, but V10.5 sends using WLM so the link is sound.
Never used the A5 Client but I'll give it a go.

Yep, I can send using the Alpha Client after setting the login info ans SSL which my mail system requires.
    Will try the Receiving bit.
EMAIL_RECEIVE() is the information in the CHM, but I cannot find the feature Receieve Mail in the Tools section.

      Ted,

That is very interesting. I just received the email notice that you had replied to my thread. Not sure how I did it and am a bit concerned that all incoming emails are going to the Alpha table, instead of Outlook. Also, the hyper links do not work in the Alpha reader.

I just added a button - Receive e-mail and tried it but as I haven't set up a table, it has probably gone into the windows doc folder.
Found the folder and opened the DBF. It opened V9 and then Tools Read Mail displayed the data. Trouble is it was 6 months old and I have no idea how it got there.

I seem to remember writing a utility to download emails, and save the attachments to different locations based on the sender.
I know I currently have a couple applications sending email, some using a profile set on the computer, others using just code
          in the script.

Gregg, I always add an "Email bugs" feature, but I've not tried parsing the responses as yet, so Keith has prompted me to try.
If I can get the downloads for Forum messages, it will save me copying and saving to me Code Clips folder.
If truth be known, I have got responses but I am also clueless as to how it happened!

Re: Videos for Emails in Alpha?

I never tried to save the emails to different locations. I did have mine set up to auto respond to emails as they came in. I don't think I still have that. It was only for my own use.
              I will explain:
As an email came in, it was parsed and the senders email was identified as one of about a dozen. I only allowed that dozen and a response was sent to the sender according to the information contained. It took a long time to work out all the details and it meant 1 complete senario for each of the senders because each email they sent was formatted differently.
              Further explanation:
              Car Business
12 companies were sending leads from a client that found their listing of a car/truck online
leads broken down(parsed). then dropped into fields of a table.
response sent to the original person who was asking about a particular car/truck from the inventory base that I kept up to date
I later sent a much better response by email and callled the original sender.
I sold a lot of cars/trucks that way
This was completely done in alpha. There is a lot of help in the old help section of alpha and this board.

Having left the internet department several years ago and retired 2 years ago, I never kept all the codes/forms/ etc.

Thanks to stan, tom and a couple others for helping me get that done years ago.

Re: Videos for Emails in Alpha?

Keith, I'll tell you that I found the built-in email_receive() function to be inconsistent at best, so I use Process Them (available for a nominal cost) to get basic info about emails into an SQL table and then I use Alpha code to process what's there. There's also a more expensive but more customizable program called Email2DB that some Alpha developers use.

Re: Videos for Emails in Alpha?

I've set up a Receive to only pick up the mail from [[email protected]] so I'll post what happens.

                  Update.
When the Receive button is pressed, the connection to the server works, and only the msgboard stuff is downloaded.
Trouble is, the link which I use as a "click through" is not in the correct format to allow that action.
