Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Am I going about this app design all wrong and viewing application code ?

I am building an app in A5 that will handle a common small government business process. I have tried to normalize the database to the 3rd level. Nothing is perfect in normalization but I am reasonably close.

I currently have some 17 tables, in the database and 6 sets. I currently have some 15 forms, I will be adding a a couple more to deal with the financial transactions; not to mention a number or reports.

Given the stage of development I am at with application it is doing everything I want, though it is far from finished.

This seems like a 'boatload of stuff' but is this common for an A5 project? I know not all apps are equal but being new to A5 if I need to go back to the design process now is the time.

Finally, is there way to see all the application code at once without having to open each script and layout and event?

    Thanks,
    Regards,

    John W.

You can print all scripts saved to the code tab from the code tab. Right click in the blank area.

You can save to text file (then print that) all code for a layout from the Code Explorer. Open a form in design mode, View menu, Code explorer.

Stan - Thanks again ... I wonder when I will ever be able to repay all the help everyone is giving me. I owe so many people so much

I should have mentioned that you can save all your scripts, funtions, etc from the code tab, not just print. I'm sure you store adequate backups of your database but saving these text files is another good insurance policy.

I do regularly back up my db, I am kind of a nervous Nellie when it comes to losing code. Adding this to my backups is a great idea and something I will incorporate. I really don't like losing my working code or objects.

As an aside I did print the code to a file and look through it. Reading it helps me learn the A5 code, so I like being able to do that periodically. It also gives me a chance to scheme out a way that may be a better way of coding a solution.

I also used the Code Explorer it will serve its purpose but I was looking to have a page with all the events and not have to go from event to event. Its quibbling and not a real problem. I will leave it as a 'personal problem' I have and need to sort out and not an A5 issue.

If you leave <All Events> selected you will get the code for all events. No need to select each event in turn.

Ted - I will look into A5Doc I have not seen a link to it for awhile but I will search the AlphaSoftware website. In the short term I will try to improve my own documentation process.

Stan - the 'All Events' is a good tip

                Thanks to both of you.

I would not say so. I have a smallish project which has 60 tables, 21 sets, 29 forms and 36 reports. But who's counting?

Re: Am I going about this app design all wrong and viewing application code ?

Keith - I guess its the way the A5 shows the pieces of the project. I did look at the AlphaSports sample database and while I did not count the number of control panel objects, mine is very small in comparison. My fear is getting lost in my own project and not being able to troubleshoot problems.

I am thinking that investing in A5Doc may be a good way to go. I have looked at it and it seems to be a nice utility and worth the money.
