Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    ?internet down

    hello

recently there was some discussion about what happens when the internet is down.
that can be due to many reasons.
recently i had a demo of a pos system by lightning POS.
the user interface is simple, elegant. anybody can design that but what impressed me most is (i have not bought the system, at the moment
i am using their desktop version)
1> when the internet is down the local server at the office takes over.
2> when the local server is down the local machine starts a stand alone mode and the transactions continue with some restrictions of functionality.
3> when each server comes back there is a button to synchronize to the main server.
if something like this is possible with alpha five i am sure all the professional web developers (i am not one of them) will be very excited to sell this idea to their customers
and secure more business for alpha five.
    thanks for reading

You are too young to be that cynical, Steve.
But I can think of a couple of issues.

The more likely "shutdown" scenario is that the Internet, that thing that is practically free for most of us, becomes expensive and/or highly controlled by a few multinational companies. Then, we will all have wished we kept those bulky books on our shelves for our kids to read. The Ray Bradbury of the day would write Fahrenheit 870 (ignition point of polycarbonate iPad).

That is the MOST difficult part! Any schmuck can design a "pos" POS interface ... and MANY have!

We use "Practice Management" package at the office. In previous versions, it functioned like that. It had a local Database, and it the connection to the server dropped, it switched to the local database over the Server database. When the connection is restored, it asked if you wished to sync the databases. Although for marketing this seems like a good feature, all in all it was a massive pain in the butt. Latency due to high network traffic, processor intensive processes would switch to the local database. Re-Syncing the local to the server is not a minor process. If the Server was actually offline and people did work offline it could take 24 hours or more for the sync process. The main database was not available all this time. It became a larger problem to sync then be off line.

If the application is that critical server redundancy is possibly a better option.

              hello

see experience counts. i am not convinced of that solution when my networked desktop is working flawlessly without any interruption and very little to take care of the program. when they give presentation they want you to think that's the next best thing there is.
              thanks.
