Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Adding a new record By Xbasic error

    Hi, I am new to xbasic and tryin to learn it. But can't getover this problem.

    I am making a script to enter a record in a table for to some reason. Have a look at the code.

    dim tbl as P;
    dim a as N;
    dim b as N;
    dim c as N;
    tbl=table.open("single");
    dim i as D;
    tbl.fetch_last();
    i=tbl.DATE;
    a=year(i);
    b=month(i);
    c=day(i);
    IF (a!=year(date())) .or. ( b!=month(date())) .or. (c!=day(date())) then
    #tbl.enter_begin();
    #tbl.DATE=Date();
    #tbl.ROOM="some text";
    #tbl.equipment_available= "Some text";
    #tbl.enter_end(.t.);
    #end if
    tbl.close()

    Now I keep getting error Method not found.

    SO I went to forum and somebody had mentioned to use topparent.new_record().
    But I dont know how to use above command.

    So Please Guide me in the right direction.

    Hi Shivam
    The code you printed looks like you are entering it in the Interactive Editor window. Is that so?

    topparent.new_record() would be used on a form for an operator to fill in the form fields base on an underlying table

      The code does work fine here.
      At which line do you get method not found?

        2nd Last line, as soon as I press enter.

          Actually I was making a script and since it was giving error at Last but 6th line (tbl.enter_begin()) as " Error Expected Value", I decided to go line by line in an interactive window to see where the problem lies which gives error ain 2nd last line.

            Don't end your lines with a semi-colon. Just remove them.

            And make space around your operands to help the interpreter here:

            IF (a != year(date())) .or. ( b != month(date())) .or. (c != day(date())) then

            I also suspect the .or. here should be replaced with .and. but you know what logic you want.

              Steven,

              1) remove the semi-colons from the end of each line. They're not necessary since you do not have multiple statements on each line.
              2) remove the pound sign prefix in the following lines
              Code:
              #tbl.enter_begin();
              #tbl.DATE=Date();
              #tbl.ROOM="some text";
              #tbl.equipment_available= "Some text";
              #tbl.enter_end(.t.);
              #end if
              3) put the entire script into a saved script, do not use the interactive editor
              4) at line one insert a new line to run the debugger
              Code:
              debug(1)
              5) then save and run the script from the code pageof the control panel

              If you still have trouble, attach a copy of your table to a reply post here.

                Shivam,

                Steve's post made me look more closely at the IF statement.

                I'd change it to:

                Code:
                IF a != year(date()) .or.  b != month(date()) .or. c != day(date())
                by dropping various groups of parentheses.

                  Thank You. I get the message. I guess main problems were {} block statement and #sign.

                  Will someone explain why do I see # sign automatically entering every time I use IF function ?

                    People, I am missing something.
                    I created a table and copy pasted the code into the editor as is to begin analising.
                    Ran line by line - it worked first time, with #s and conditions as is.
                    The only difference for the one fieldname I used Equipment

                    (And I started with an empty table - that could have misled the test)

                      The pound sign is useful in the interactive window, only. Check the help file discussion on the "interactive window". Pound sign should NOT be used in final code. The pound sign facilitates use of the interactive window, which normally executes only one line at a time (each time enter is pressed). As explained in the helps, the pound sign permits multiple lines to be executed on a single ENTER key stroke. However, this has nothing to do with final code running from the regular code editor.

                        Ray, I don't think you should be using interactive window features in the regular code editor. Remove the pound sign prefixes. Remove semicolons unless you're using them to combine multiple statements on a single line.

                          Shivam,

                          Please post future questions in the message board forum that corresponds to the version of Alpha Five you are using. There are "some" differences between versions. Technical questions such as you've framed here belong elsewhere. Thanks.

                            I was working in the interactive window Tom - as I suspected Shivam had been, just as a starting point, to try replicate the problem.

                              Ray, I think the IW is designed to test discrete statements and expressions, and is ill suited for running complete program scripts. Better to use the code editor and debugger, I should think. -- tom
