Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Crystal Report Developers considering A5

I dont know if this has been addressed in the forum earlier but I thought I would pass along a few items of interest for people who want to know how well CR works with A5. In my expermentation with CR I have found I can manage my data connections through it and do not need to rely on A5 connection code. I am also able to use the CR Command objects (SQL queries) inside of CR as well as handle my command or table links inside the Database Expert. That means I am not limited to solely what I create in my A5 app so far as data queries. I am able to use parameters and use the resulting CR prompts when running the report inside of A5. All in all, I seem to have most of the CR functionality.

I need to explore the viewer a bit more. For example, I am not getting my 'Prompt' tree in the viewer once the report is run, but this is probably a limitation of the older activex viewer.

These are all good things, but I need to experiment more. Suffice it to say I pretty darn excited. :)

    Again thanks to Alpha!

Actually used an older version of CR with the dbf tables years ago and it was fine, however I could do all I wanted with the built in report builder that comes with a5 faster. I am sure it will work great with mysql.

Whats nice is being able to use the viewer inside the A5 app. I suppose it what it's used to but I find CR easy to work with and something that is already in a lot of places. I just see this as a plus

        It is a plus.

CR has been able to do reporting against many databases for many years. I started working with it in about 1996. It does cost some dollars to purchase and to update, so I chose to use the alpha built in report maker.

If you do it right, it does not matter if a client has cr or not. You make the report into an exe and executed on the client machine and it prints or shows. That is how I used it. (been a while - maybe I had to include a dll)

Dave - In my implementation I should just need include the activeX control with the install package and make it part of the A5 install or so I hope. You are correct the older versions did have the generate an .exe ability. However, that has been gone for quite some time. The way my process is working is I generate the report(s) or form(s) with CR and them save them to my app repprt folder. Then from my A5 app I open a file dialog select the report and pass that to the A5 dialog code containing the activex viewer. Then the report displays. Nothing more is needed. I select and run any CR report I have access to on the pc or network. I have a ways to go, but its working pretty well right now. When I have a report needing record selection parameters the prompts appear, I make the selections and the report is opened. The other nice thing is opens adding new reports to any user of Crystal and all the data connections, queries are handled within CR.

If you develop CR solutions this is all good.
