Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

I contend two other causes contribute, at least in part, to the reduction in DT postings. First is the that Alpha is clearly pushing web development, their marketing is directing people away from DT. The other is that Alpha has not promoted the desktop development software side like they have in the past. So far as I know there has not been one significant sales promotion for V11 and Unlimited Runtime as a bundle. That last promotion was V11, Unlimited Runtime, and WAS. I dont need WAS and refuse to pay for it. When I asked if I could get a price reduction by including the WAS I was told that was not possible. Until something like the "too good to pass up promotion" comes along for the desktop I doubt the majority of people will get to excited about it. So at v.10.5 I remain.

I would suggest that "Alpha" is not pushing DT, the market is. They are just staying ahead of the bell curve by focusing on it now rather than playing catch-up to the market. I provide software consulting services, and very few are asking for traditional Desktop applications (LAN based, Windows GUI, etc.). IADN is running some classes right now, and very few developers are asking for classes in Desktop. Where I do get Desktop requests are for large institutions like a VA Hospital RFP recently; I proposed a web-based solution even though they asked for "LAN-based Windows GUI" in their spec; I don't know the outcome yet.

I'd refer to one of Richard Rabins' emails (quoted): it's not about the desktop or internet anymore, it's about mobile. While we haven't seen too much yet on the mobile side of Alpha, know that that will change dramatically in the near future. And mobile is where you really want to be as a developer. Alpha is making the right decision here I think.

        Dear friend,
Mary Meeker, the highly respected Morgan Stanley analyst, recently reported "...that the world is currently in the midst of the fifth major technology cycle of the past half a century. The previous four were the mainframe era of the 1950s and 60s, the mini-computer era of the 1970s and the desktop Internet era of the 80s. The current cycle is the era of the mobile Internet." She goes on to predict that within the next five years "more users will connect to the Internet over mobile devices than desktop PCs."

In a report released in mid-February 2011, John C. McCarthy, a vice president and principal analyst at Forrester Research, said that the business opportunities associated with mobile applications was just beginning. Mr. McCarthy estimates that the combined revenues from mobile applications, services and business management will reach $54.6 billion a year by 2015. He also estimates that the revenue created from customers buying and downloading apps to smartphones and tablets will reach $38 billion by 2015. (http://bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/0...eport-predicts)

International Data Corporation (IDC), in their market report, Worldwide Software as a Service 2010-2014 Forecast: Software Will Never Be the Same, predicted that by 2012, nearly 85% of net-new software firms will be built around SaaS services. Also, by 2014, 65% of new products from all ISVs will be delivered as SaaS services, and 34% of all new business software purchases will be made via SaaS.. The study also predicts that SaaS software revenue will total $40.5 billion by 2014, representing a 25.3% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) since 2009, with applications accounting for nearly half of that total (http://softwarestrategiesblog.com/20...dscape-by-2012).

With the release of Alpha 5 Version 11, we will be providing you with the ideal way to develop SaaS-based web/mobile applications that will run on all 3 key platforms that have emerged over the past 24 months: full Desktop/Laptop browsers; Tablets; and, SmartPhones.

Because the upcoming Alpha Five Version 11 is based on HTML5/CSS3/JavaScript on the front-end, and SQL on the back-end, you will be able to develop applications faster than you can with any other platform, and they will run securely and look and behave like "native" applications on all major devices (Windows-based Desktops, Laptops, Tablets and Smartphones; Macintosh Desktops, Laptops, iPads and iPhones; Android-based Smartphones; Palms; Blackberrys; Samsung Galaxy Tablets and Smartphones; etc...)

As a result of the tremendous momentum that is building in the market for the type of secure business applications that you will be able to develop with Alpha 5 Version 11, we are thinking about starting a new initiative that would provide you with web/mobile application development and SaaS deployment services, as well as a range of marketing support and services, that will enable you to quickly capitalize on this rapidly emerging market opportunity.
