Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Upgrade from version 1.03 to newest version

I have been using version 1.03 for years. I bought a newer version some time ago and most of the information is lost when upgrading. I believe I could upgrade through the various versions to get to a newer version. How can i get a copy of Version 2 of Alpha Five. For that matter what version could I use for an upgrade without loosing all of my version 1.03 settings and data?

Gary, the difference in versions is probably too large to enable the forms to be replicated.
The DBF's should still be usable, but the forms and probably the logic might need reviewing or indeed rebuilding.

Apologies to anyone I haven't managed to upset yet.
You are held in a queue and I will get to you soon.

Going on memory(might not be so good):
      to v5 to v8 to 11 or

I may have missed or added a version or 2. This question has been asked before and that is what I remember. A search will probably get you going.

There will be things to do at each version up to keep all your information. a lot has changed!

I know about loosing data when I tried to upgrade to version 5. I thought maybe I can get versions, 2, 3 ,4 ,5 and make the incremental upgrades so I do not loose things. How do I get version 2?

I don't think going through the versions is going to help...

You said that you have lost data going to version 5? What type of data did you lose and what steps did you take to convert?

Keeping the data (.dbf) and memo (.fpt or .xxx) would be the issues to watch... I don't recall all of the different file extensions that have held memo fields but they are easy to over look and that causes data loss.

It has been years since I did the upgrade, but the indexes and forms I believe did not move to 5.

Correct... they will have to be rebuilt..(along with all other objects) but they aren't included in the common definition of 'data'....

How can I get version 2.0 of A5? If it is a small upgrade i.e. 1 to 2, verses 1 to 5 it may work and not loose data.

                Any idea on getting 2?

Gary, if I recall correctly, version 1 was built for 16 bit machines. I don't know of any way to save your designs when you upgrade to later versions of Alpha's 32 bit software. On the other hand the "data" you entered into your designs should be carried forward or converted cleanly without loss of any of the information you entered into the database. I say all this because I infer from your posts that you are using the term "data" to include not only the records you entered into the system, but your layout designs, reports, forms, labels, etc. Most of us here do not include these design elements when we use the term "data".

Version 2 will not help you nothing but the data you enter into an applicaton can be carried forward. I just opened an old V1 table in V5 and had no problems seeing the data & as soon as I changed a record it rebuilt all of my indexes. You will have to recreate all of your forms, reports, code and every thing else. Sorry but there is no easy way.
